I just need to do basic stuff like resize the image and write on it. Most edit programs don't seem to work with the 3100.

using cacko rom. Tried alot of programs, actually I'm pretty sure I tried all the photo programs. I don't remember them all. qpphoto works, sorta, only in sideways mode and it's very slow.

try cloverpaint (works only in portrait mode) and/or imagemagick

I use Visual Q - (Depends: libtiff)
There is no option for writing on a photo though. It doesn't have any brushes either.
It has these options:

Contrast, brightness, color balance, gamma

[Filters]
blur, blur strength
sharpen, sharpen strength
emboss, color emboss, dark emboss
mosaic
