Lite version is a special release of Cacko 1.22, which includes only a minimum set of programs and libraries and fits into 17 Mb. Everything else is available for installation from Cacko feed.

Download ROM here: http://cacko.oesf.org/downloads/rom/1.22/s...-1149040205.zip

Have fun!

CACkO Zaurus Qtopia ROM 1.22 1149040205 (SL-C7x0) "Lisa"
Fri Feb 4 11:50:22 MSK 2005

© Cacko Team (http://cacko.biz), 2003-2005

Info about installation and FAQ look on our site: http://cacko.biz/cacko/
IMPORTANT:  This ROM requries a flash partition at least 17 MBytes in size!
Make sure to repartition your internal flash before updating ROM!

Installation:

    1. Extract the 3 files - initrd.bin tools.tar updater.sh - to the root of your CF or SD/MMC card.
    2. Make sure that Zaurus isn't plugged into AC power.
    3. Remove battery for at least 5 seconds.
    4. Replace battery (replace battery cover, lock cover), plug in AC power.
    5. Press and hold the "OK" button on the keyboard.
    6. Turn the power on, you should see the Japanese service menu.
    7. Now Plug in the Power Cord. (You will get an error if it isn't plugged in!)
    8. Select option 4 (flash/update).
    9. You then have four options (1. USB, 2. CF, 3. SD, 4. Back)
    10. Choose either option 2 or 3, depending on which media you put the files on.

    11. Select "5 Flash repartition", enter 17 when prompted for root partition size.
    12. Flash will be repartioned and Zaurus will reboot.

    13. Repeat steps 2-10 again and wait for the menu start menu.
    14. Now select "1 Install new ROM" and wait - Zaurus will reboot.

-------------

Release Notes:

This is the "Lite" version of Cacko ROM 1.22.
The only difference is that the following applications were removed and packaged into Cacko feed:

   - Addressbook
   - Datebook
   - FileSearch
   - Hancom Presenter
   - Hancom Sheet
   - Hancom Word
   - HelpBrowser
   - ImagePad
   - Kino2
   - Migration
   - Mirror
   - NetFront Web Browser
   - VPN modules
   - Opera Web Browser
   - Email
   - RecieveData
   - LUS ScreenSaver
   - TextEditor
   - ToDoList
   - Voice Recorder
   - Midnight Commander
   - Neocal
   - scmxx
   - tcpdump
   - iptables-base

This ROM uses 10 MB less of root partition and gives you and great flexibility - install only applications you want.
You'll have about 39Mb (100Mb for C760/C860) of internal flash free.

Note: Upon first Qtopia boot you will recieve empty screen instead of Owner Information dialog.
This is because Sharp addressbook application was removed from the ROM.
Just click Finish to skip this screen and add owner info later when you install PIM applications of your choice.

SWEET!

Now for the first nagging question. Just how much space will each of the excluded apps take in the non-squashfs file system? I know we still get some compression.

I looked at the list of what is missing and listed down what I would want to put on.

Hancom Word (Need to register TextMaker)
Hancom Sheet
Kino2 (Almost surprised this wasn't in the base  )
Opera
Screensaver (gotta have the cool fish!)
Neocal
Netfront (Never fails, I find a site that won't work in Opera that does in Netfront)

If the IPK size is any indication of the space the app will take on the Z, then even with what I thought was a short list, I might end up putting 7 megs back on the Z.

So, to reflash or not to reflash for just 3 megs is the question . . .

I'm sure I will, just because it is cool, but I would like to know if we can pre-guess how much space each excluded app will take on the Z.

Oh, and thanks a million!!!!  Too bad I can't donate that much.

Awsome, I like the sound of that.

I don't have time to devote to a full ROM, at least that's my translation of what my wife says.... But I think this should make it really easy to do a 'roll your own' type ROM.

I propose to install base stuff onto a lite ROM, tar it off and squash that stuff into a second squashfs so I've got everything I want but still at the minimum hit.

Excellent work Anton, thanks!

BTW: Are your proposed Hotfix A bits included ?

Does anyone know how much the default Sharp ROM requires as far as flash partition size.  The only thing that has kept me from flashing Cacko so far is that I didn't want to go through the trouble of re-partitioning the flash.

Make a NAND backup first or download one of the virgin images from conics.net before you start.

If you ever want to do a NAND restore you don't need to repartition since the NAND image holds all the partitioning information.

You should find plenty of information on NAND backup/restore on the www.shirtpocket.co.uk website if you don't want to trawl OESF.

The Hotfix will also need to be applied to the lite ROM.  It was decided that the two ROMs should be kept to the same revision.

Enjoy!

Strange question. Of course reflash

Serousely, you'll need to try it for yourself - make a backup of existing ROM, flash lite version, install apps you want and then see if it saves you any space. Then decied if it's worth it or not...

What about the Japanese kernel for the lite version?

Can I just take it from the Japanese kernel for the full 1.22 package and will it work?

mmm seems lite version has problems installing apps usin add/remove software from feed to ram, like Kino2, netfront and others, but can be installed to sd oO, would it be some permission errorson the filesystem?

I have Cacko-lite + kino installed to internal flash from the feed.  Ugh!  The Packages file on the feed is not correct!  I'll fix it ASAP....

OK It has been fixed folks.  Please let us know if you have any other anomalies with the feed.

As an aside, for Sharp ROM users (eg us SL-6000L users who don't have a good ROM alternative yet  ), the seperated Netfront browser seems to work pretty well (except oddly I had troubles changing the homepage, but no big deal). Good for those Sharp ROM folks looking for an alternative browser.

Yeah, I hope Sharp won't beat me to death for that

Also, C300 users may appriciate a clean installation of Opera 7.25
