New Zaurus Owner

Hi all,

Just wanted to let you know I have just bought a new zaurus sl-c3000. I should be receiving it somewhere next week. Expect a lot of questions from me    and hopefully some answers as well...

I plan on using it as a:

*latex writer.
*late-night in bed browsing machine.
*research device (I work at the university of Antwerp in the field of ubiquitous computing / security).
*PIM
*general tinker device. Too bad this often conflicts with using it as a PIM as I experienced with my sl-c750...

Best regards,
Jan

Congratulations on the purchase.

I am Zaurus-less at present and so close to ordering a 3000.

Let us have your impressions.

I will certainly give my impressions. I have to date used a Toshiba 310, sl-c750, Palm Tungsten T3 and next week the sl-c3000, so I can compare. You will be able to find the review at www.ubiquitouscomputing.org (site is out of date, but I am in the progress of updating it to drupal CMS).

best regards

hi guys
since all of you seem so learnt, help me with my queries'
i ma very new to pDA world.i am not some linux professional like many of the guys who buy zaurus.
The reasons i wanna buy PDA are'
1. to manage my schedules and make instant notes.
2. access all pdf word and other windows files on PDA.
3. see movies (avi ripped files) and listen songs
4. www
i am very impressed with zaurus since it comes with 4GB hardisk and willlike to buy it very soon.
the problem is that  after going through forums it seems i have to be linux expert to get its fullest use.it may not play movies and net can also be difficult.
pls suggest still i should go for c3000(which i am dying to buy) or is there some better option for my needs.

Hi,
Latex on a PDA is really high geek. I am using this package:
http://users.ox.ac.uk/~univ0103/z-tex/
I hat to get some fonts from my debian linux and put them somewhere, where the z-tex can find them.
Let me know if you have problems with the package. There is a german howto on this issue I could translate for you...
Cheers,
Sam
PS: There is also a dviviewer for the zaurus:

Anyone interested in volunteering to add teTex to OE? I have already added the dviviewer a couple of months ago.

Harry,

I'm not so 'learnt', but I'll give you some input anyway...

1. No problem doing this with Zaurus. You can use calendar and contacts built-in or get other apps like 'tkcAddressbook' and tkcCalendar or KO/Pi and KA/Pi, etc.

2. There are PDF readers you can install. You can open MS Word/Excel, etc files using the built-in apps, Hancom Word and HancomSheet, etc...

3.There is a built-in movie player or you can install other player apps.

4. You can surf the internet with built-in web browser or get other app.

You can use the Zaurus the way it is out of the box and it will do most of what you want. By installing another app for PDF's it should do everthing you want.

If you want to go beyond that and learn about Linux you can do that to. But you don't have to. You can use it 'out of the box' much like a Palm or PocketPC and not really deal with the Linux part 'under the hood'.

Having used many other PDA's before getting a Zaurus, I can tell you that they are the best!

HTH,

Mark

Hi Harry,

There are plenty of owners here who started off not knowing linux.  The zaurus should be able to do all of your requirements, but the movie watching aspect of it is the most unknown to me.  The 3000 has a different video chip than the others and I am unsure if there is a movie player that can do it justice.

Frankly I saw a dell axim x50 play 640x359 (widescreen) at 29.97 frames per second (same video as 3000) and some decent looking pim apps.  The downside is that you won't get 4gb hdd, nice big built in keyboard or the good amount of opensource software.  I was told the PIM I saw was about $50 for the pocket PC.

Hi there Harry,

To be honest, you can do all the things you want to do with much cheaper devices that are probably more apt at it, such as the mentioned dell model. They have a VGA screen too, and perhaps more importantly, built in wifi, which the zaurus models (except the 6000) don't have. There are also models with a CF slot in which you can insert a 4GB CF microdrive of flash memory card.

If however you are eager to learn new things and like to step out of predifined boundaries, the Z is an excellent device. It also has a very nice screen, a very good keyboard (nice for Instant Messaging, browsing, text files etc. and indeed a built in HD. On top it has a very open architecture so it CAN (not HAS TO) be used for experimentation. It may also be a good device to actually learn linux on (although I can't vouch for this as I already knew it before buying the Z). Biggest minusses are the price and the lack of internal wi-fi according to me.

Hi Teletubby,

I will check out that package. Hope it runs on the sl-c3000 already. Geeky it certainly is, but also very convenient I think. Most of my docs are written in latex, and being able to do this on the bus or in bed is a definite plus.

It has arrived. I received my sl-c3000 today. First impression is very favorable:

Screen beautiful as ever (I compare to my now sold sl-c750).
Keyboard much nicer than previous version (typing is a lot more fluid).
Heavier and bigger than 750, don't know if it will be a problem yet, I'll report on that in the full review.
Harddisk is nice, no more swapping CF card between wireless and storage.
Sandisk SD card works out of the box.
Asus wl-110 works out of the box with 128bits wep.

I ordered it through www.pulster.de. The chap was very nice and helpful, quick in its reply's and the zaurus+shipping to Belgium was 763,90EUR. Certainly recommended. He doesn't stock many accessory's though.

More results and pictures will be posted on the review on my website (see my signature). I have a very busy schedule until march 2nd so don't expect it before this date... You can always ask questions though.
