I either need to buy or sell a SL-5500 for parts...

I had put it away so that I wouldn\'t use it till I got a screen protector. As soon as I got screen protectors, I installed one, but got dissatisfied with my work, as I trapped a bit of dust under it and creased it in the process... So I decided to remove it and start with another one...

Big mistake... Shattered my touch screen digitizer layer...

LCD still works... Everything still goes, just can\'t use the stylus...

Is that layer replacable? Is there a source for replacements? Anyone have a bricked SL-5500 with a good digitizer that they\'ll sell me?

Looks like I\'m gonna be buying a new Z soon... Maybe I should try installing the screen protectors a bit more carefully.

MANNNNN!! i feel your pain that sucks!, if you can just save up for a SL 6000. But yeah first look and see if there are replacement parts. Im sure somebody on this forum has a parts SL 5500

Just as a note, the 5000 is suppsed to have the same screen as the 5500, so you should be able to acquire a 5000 cheaper than a 5500.

There was a chap a while back (in the UK) who flashed a 5500 rom onto his 5000, and stuffed it, but had a good screen.

Maybe you too could sort something out. I don\'t know if he got it working again as he didn\'t post back.

There was a zaurus with a bust screen on ebay in the uk recently that went for over Â£80. it will be good as a spare battery,cradle, case, stylus and charger. It will have some value if you don\'t want to find a machine and transplant the screen yourself.

i broke my Z 5500 screen going to sit indian style while it was in my cargo pocket. very stupid...
the screen from sharp is about $400 since i last checked in 2002.
A used 5500 came to me at $200 on ebay so you might as well consider getting another unit.

yep... That\'s the one... I also got a bit of liquid from the incuded screen cleaning wipes trapped under the protector... Another reason I was removing it.

Still got the dead 5000 that thinks its a 5500, the screen is not perfected got a dull section in the middle which does not effect it\'s use.

I have a Sharp refurbished unit coming from the States this week with a 30 Day Warrenty, all for $144.00 including shipping.

Call the Sharp number in your Start-Up Guide. They may be able to repair that for less than you think. Who knows?

Thats terrible, hell, I\'d open my wrists if that happened to me. See if Sharp USA can help, I think they\'d fix it for a fee, but less than a new one, check their price against ebay.

My sincere sympathy, had I not commited to giving my 5500 to my friend I\'d have worked out something with you.

Maybe someone here who has upgraded to a newer model can help, come on guys...

I read somewhere that you can order a replacement touchscreen glass for the Dell Axium, and it\'s compatible with the Zaurus, but the cable is wired backwards. The trick is to use the ribbon cable off the old touchscreen, and splice it on the Axium touchscreen.
I can\'t find the link right now for the instructions (it was somewhere on the old devnet forums), but I remember that the cost of the Axium touchscreen was around $55.

Am I correct in assuming if the touch screen is stuffed the Z is useless??
There\'s no way around starting up and only using the k\'board??

I dealt w/ a broken digitizer for a few months while trying to find a cheap replacement (before we figured out how to use the Axim replacement-- I eventually bought a 5000d cheap) You can navigate and use the Z w/o stylus pretty well, but that startup stylus config is a bitch. It depends on how broke your digitizer is-- I just cracked the corner, so I could still get it to respond, but drawing on it w/ DrawPad produced wacky random lines. When it reset, I had to try about 30 or 40 times before it accepted my config. Unfortunately, $#@! pda OS designers give you NO way of bypassing this! (Same is true for Palm devices-- a real tragedy for devices like the Treo 600 that barely even need the stylus)

I believe I once knew how to force it to skip that by making it think it had already done the calibration by booting to console (/a1) and mucking with the files... but I can\'t for the life of me remember what I did. Maybe it was just a dream. Sorry...

So you CAN boot to console?? What\'s the \"/a1\" for??
I\'m guessing there must be more hidden keys than just the C+D + hard reset?
I\'m waiting to get my hands on a CF writer so I can try out more experiments....
