Mozilla Thunderbird, Firebird, And Sunbird For Z?
« on: February 26, 2005, 06:50:08 pm »
This may be a stupid question, but why don't we have a build of Mozilla Firefox (Browser), Thunderbird (E-Mail) and Sunbird (Calendar) for the Zaurus (or do we and I just missed it?)?  These products look set to overtake Internet Explorer (IE), Outlook Express (OE) and possibly even Outlook & Outlook Calendar in an event that only happens once every decade!

Has this subject already been discussed elsewhere?  Does the Zuarus have enough power (400+ MHz), memory (64 MB Ram), disk capacity (4+ GB and up), and display resolution (640x480 VGA) to handle these?  If so, wouldn't that give the Zuarus the kind of software that would make them almost supperior to their Windows desktop counterparts?

Maybe the Zaurus could then stand on its own as a computer and not just a cool-looking appendage of a desktop computer.

What are your thoughts?  What are some of the facts on this matter?

Is the Mozilla Suite's source code available?  Are they open source?  Do we have the power and ability to compile them for the Zaurus?

This may turn into an exciting topic!

Firefox is available in the x11 feed for OpenZaurus, I have a 5500 so it'd be way too big to fit on my screen.

pdaXrom also has it.

Why don't they have it for QTopia?  What's are the core linux differences between OpenZaurus/pdaXrom and QTopia?  Why does some stuff only work on one or the other?

...or would the OpenZaurus and pdaXrom Firefox work on QTopia?

What about Thunderbird?  Is there a reason why it might not work?

There is a SunBird in the feed but I have yet to get it working.

Left a post in march but have yet to get a response or figure it out myself...

There are probably library reasons and many others.  Just use pdaXqtrom.  Best of both worlds.

I chose IE not because I want it, but realistically speaking, IE will still be the predominant browser, whether we like it or not.

btw, its been over one year since the start of this post, and FF is gaining traction but still a long way to go in overturning IE.

I use FF exclusively except for some sites that refuse to work in anything other than IE. And even then, I run IE in FF via an extension!

interestingly, hotmail live worked in FF with a bit of UI glitch while it failed completely in IE 6.0 on my XP notebook!

OH MY GOSH!  lol.  DaddyGeek necroposts and I follow suit.

I'm still hoping for Firefox to get around 50%

Found the problem with the Sunbird...
Need to launch it from a command line with "sunbird -calendar" for some reason.
