Just Played With The C1000.... First Impressions
« on: March 18, 2005, 02:09:47 am »
Hi All,

Just played with the C1000 in Bic Camera in Japan,
and picked up a brochure on it. They just arrived in
store today.

Bic has them for 49800 Yen (About $475 US at
current exchange rate). Bic Camera is a big chain store
here in Japan, so expect big store prices.

Note that this price is about 10000 Yen ($95US) less than
what they were selling the C860 for *yesterday*. In fact, the
C860 has no price drop yet. I presume they just haven't
updated the display...

Subjectively the C1000 feels quite a bit lighter than the
C3000, even though the supposed difference is only 20g.
The case is exactly the same as the C3000 except in
colour scheme. For some reason it seems smaller, even
though it isn't. Weird. Anyone else played with one and
got the same impression? They also had the C3000 and
C860 on hand so I got to compare all three.

I really like the new case. The black looks cool.
I have a C860 and I am (almost) tempted to upgrade
solely on the aesthetics   Although that could be a
serious case of newmodelmustupgradeitis coming on

Incidentally, I checked the System Info program on the
C1000 (in Japanese). There's a tab for devices, and it
had no no mention of a second CF slot. Only one SD, CF and USB.
Of course that doesn't conclusively prove that there isn't
another one in there

If you guys have specific things you want me to check out,
lemme know and I'll go do it (assuming the store staff won't
throw me out first )

Cheers,

Ford

Did we find out whether it had the usb host?
Gorgeous C860, 256 Sandisk SD, 1Gig Pretec 40x CF, PDAIR leather case & the really cool retractable iPDA USB sync/charge cable. Powered by PDAXROM BETA 1.

My wish - to have a Command & Conquer style game on my Z! (FREECNC!!!) Simcity 2000 would also be great.

The smaller appearance is probably just due to the color scheme - black tends to make things look smaller, while white makes things look bigger. I haven't checked one out yet, though. I plan to stop by a store tomorrow and have a look.

How about bringing CF (or MMC/SD) card into the store, poping it in, then running dmesg with output written to the card? Everybody here would love to see what dmesg says on C1000. Thanks for report!

albertr:

That would require installing a terminal application, as the Zauruses don't have one installed by default.

Ahh, right. Sorry, my bad. Maybe they would allow to install it from the card? Could be worth a try... The other way around is to try to open the log file in GUI editor (hancom word or whatever it has) and then save it on the card?

I may be wrong, but I thought logging is not enabled by default.
I'm now an iphone user and use my zaurii as serial terminals, perl and shell scripting and when I need 640x480 screens

Just a quick question about the looks - eveybody says its black - but from the photos it does not look all black  (say like the C750) but more of a gryeish black.

Is it really black as charcoal black ?

I checked it out today, and I have to agree, it really is quite stylish.

nilch:
It's both black and grey... the top and bottom are black, and the area around the screen and keyboard is grey.

dmesg should still work though - it's just a question of how to run that command and output the data without needing to install anything.

Do the Sharp based ROMs pick up .desktop files stored on a storage card? How do they perform the symlinking (is this even done?) for apps on a card. If so, you could create a .desktop file to call a script (also on the card) which would do something like 'dmesg > file.txt' and save it on the card.

Perhaps? I've not used a Sharp ROM for a long time so I'm just guessing here at how apps on a card are handled.

-or-

You could reboot and press the /? key (assuming this still works) and do it yourself from the terminal.

Yep you are correct.  There may not be logging to a messages file but there is a dmesg file in /var/log.  With talk about .desktop and rebooting to root, it would just be easier to pop in a flash card and install console.  If you do it in front of the sales people they might be interested in the info as well.

Is the USB Host port on the Zaurus C1000 (and the C3000) the same as the USB host port on the SL-6000L ? Do the same adapter (like the iriver ones) fit on the C1000 too ?

Hope they didnt go about and change the port specs again (like all other companies).

Hi nilch,

the USB port on the SL-6000/C1000/C3000 is not a SHARP specification.
It's a USB-OTG (On The Go) connector, worldwide standard.

Tons of informations are at [a href=\"http://www.usb.org]USB.org[/url].
Specification for the connector is here.
