Citrix Options For The Zaurus
« on: March 19, 2005, 02:56:34 pm »
I spent a good amount of time researching options for connecting a Zaurus to a Citrix MetaFrame server.  I never found a good solution, but for future researchers I consolidated what I learned here:

https://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=Networ...or_my_Zaurus.3F

Some of the information may apply to using Microsoft Windows Terminal Services, the RDP protocol and of course the ICA protocol.

The lack of a proven solution was a real dissapointment:  A handheld with a good keyboard and a landscape 640x480 screen would make an incredible mobile Citrix client.

As far as the old ARM client goes I think it's X based and since PDAXROM have gone VFP then I don't imagine the binary will be compatible (different ABI on the math libraries etc. even if FPE is built into the PDAXROM kernel).

Possibly the only viable target for the old ARM client from Citrix is PocketWorkstation and since the installer calls cpio then this is probably the only distribution that you could do a standard installation on. Haven't tried it though. Unpacked the installer and gave up in disgust. May try it later.

iamasmith - thanks!  I added your comments to the FAQ, if that's ok.

guanxi,
I have been searching high and low for a Citrix solution myself. It would be real handy. Thanks for the info!

BTW-I contacted thinkofit re. their Winconnect Z product, and they said it was an "obsolete" product, and they don't sell it anymore. It's still available at handago-but there is no free trial-and I'm not going to pay 79.00 for a piece of software if I can't even test run it first!

I have a 5500, running the Sharp 3.10 ROM. (In case you find something out there that might work...) :-)

Have you tried Citrix' Java client?

In general, I'd setup remote control of a Windows box (e.g. via ssh and vnc).  That way, you have access to a Citrix client and any other software that requires Windows.

Thanks for the info on the WindowsZ client; I added it to the FAQ.

The current java clients require Swing for the .jar based ones and propritary M$ stuff for the cab based ones.

I think you are unlikely to get them running - BTW: They are 'applet only' now.

The older version (gave a JAVA application ...which you can't download anymore it seems) requires AWT support and I managed to get it running on an IPK using Kaffe once - various font problems, then it crashed.

I wouldn't hold out much hope unless you can pull off a full JRE installation on your Z (blackdown JRE 1.3.1 and PocketWorkstation is a possibility).... it's going to be real slow though.

For the record:

I asked Sharp; they responded,
Quote
You can go to the developers site at www.sdgsystems.com and you may find the software you need at that site.
A lead!  I looked at the sdgsystems.com website, but found nothing.  I e-mailed them, asking if they would provide anything they had 'as is', with no warranty or support.  They only referred me to thinsoftinc.com; saying nothing about whether they ever made a Citrix client.

I made the same request to ThinSoft; they referred me to Citrix, saying only that they "do not offer any Citrix ICA client for Sharp Zaurus."

If anyone finds something, please post updates here and/or at the FAQ:

Hi, old thread.  Any news on this?  My high school uses Citrix and I would love to be able to use the remote client on my Zaurus Sl-C1000.

Would the Java client work?  I use the java client on my Linux box.
