Has anybody else noticed that their Z is running really HOT running GPE? I never noticed that with OPIE. is there something different with apm for GPE that could be causing it?[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=81472\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Yes, I found the same thing.  I thought maybe it had something to do with the wifi card being in.[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=81479\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Even with the card in it wasn't like that for me under OPIE, but for the sake of arguement I just popped it out & will leave it on for a while & see what happens.

I'm just worried that this might be damaging my Z. A replacement would be quite some time away of that were to happen.

~Screen Setup - The default brightness level of 10 does not accurately reflect the true bright ness. Adjusting the brightness and then setting it back to 10 does not yeild the same level of brighness as before the change.
That said, the brighness does not stay at the requested value. It snaps back almost immediately back to 10 which is now kind of dark. The brighness applet does allow the setting to be changed.
Due to unreadable brightness status on collie - Needs to be fixed at kernel level
-----
I take it the same holds true for Poodle?

Why does it have to be fixed at kernel level? The brightness app works perfectly for OPIE with a sl 5500.

Just to touch base, this is definitely happening & is not just my imagination. And My Z's been on for a while now while I've been listening to mp3's with NO wireless card plugged in & it's still getting pretty warm.

Any other models experiencing the same, or is it just the 5600?

I find that my 5500 is warm to the touch on the back when I'm sshing into it while it's in the cradle, but other than that it's fairly cool.  If it's out of the cradle, it never even feels warm.

When the Zs plugged in or being charged it gets pretty warm.  So im assuming that your chargeing it in the cradle but not when you take it out?

Re: HOT Z's

I finally had to switch back to OPIE 'cause of this problem & the increased power drain (which might be related). I walk to & from work, which takes about an hour one way. Under OPIE + xmms I can listen to mp3's the whole time no prob & still have juice & a moderately cool Z when I arrive, while using GPE + gxine my Z got pretty darn warm & shut down on me on three separate occasions before the end of my walk, requiring me to recharge before it would power back on (which caused more than a little worry on my part... ).

Yep.  I figured it was probably more due to the charging than anything.

When you are playing mp3's using gxine+gpe, how much cpu usage do you get, it shouldnt be more than 15%.
Even the zaurus sl5500 can play mp3's at 18% cpu, and oggs at 20% cpu, so you probably should check your cpu usage and see if it is within acceptable limits.

I didn't check that @ the time & I'm back on OPIE right now, but I did have to add a 32mb swap to even be able to run gxine, which shows it's a pretty intensive program to begin with.

However, I did notice the heat before using gxine, so I don't think it was exclusively releated to it. It's just that while using it did I run into the dead-Z problem which made me back away.

I would be willing to wager a small amount that it's conencted to apmd being disabled on the Collie (5000D/5500/5500G) by default in OZ/GPE 3.5.3.  I notice the same thing under OPIE if I comment out the /dev/apm_bios in /etc/device_table.

Hi all,

Just installed OZ/GPE 3.5.3. Lovin' it, feeling myself at home... maybe because I'm a near-die-hard GNOME user

Only a minor gripe on contacts: I can't tell a recurring event to happen, say, "at the first Monday of the month"...

I'm migrating from PalmOS, is this way of migrating Calendar data still valid on GPE?

Thank you, everybody in OZ and GPE scenes, for the great work!

I don't think so. I'm not sure whether vCal files are supported atm but you could try this page for some ideas: http://www.handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/GpeSync

Otherwise, do ask in #gpe and someone more knowedgelable than me about the PIM stuff will be able to help you.

I saw that under OZ/GPE 3.5.4RC on 5500 /dev/apm_bios is created by /etc/init.d/devices script and then deleted by GPE. This breaks suspend and reboot.
Is it done on purpose?
If I rerun /etc/init.d/devices script, suspend and reboot work.
How can I make GPE not to remove the file?

This is probably not the desired behaviour, please post a bug about it.

Try grep'ing the rest of the /etc/init.d scripts and see if it's deleted there.

thats hack from oz 3.5.3 times - later we fixed kernel APM problem so it is not needed anymore.

edit /etc/X11/Xserver and comment/remove two lines:
Code: [Select]
rm -rf /dev/apm_bios
killall apmd
OpenZaurus 3.5.4x Release Manager
OpenEmbedded, Ångström, Poky developer
My website

Misc embedded hardware.
