Newbie Trying To Understand Samba Setup
« on: April 14, 2005, 03:23:34 pm »
I am sure i am not alone with this problem...

Is there a guide anywhere on how to set up Samba with a Windows box.  I have been trying many different things and reading posts and am now quite confused.

I have downloaded and installed the Samba ipks, modified the smb.conf for wireless as well and added the windows workgroup name.

Not sure what to do now?? Is it running?

What runs on the Win box?

I can see the devide DHCP address on my router and email/net works fine. How does Samba now see the Win box?

Any help appreciated!

nothing runs on windows as far as samba, samba is the unix version of file and printer sharing.  check out this http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/SMB-HOWTO.html
for general configuration.
you would access the zaurus through your network neighborhood.

Thanks i have been reading their site and i'll check this one two.

What  I find strange is that noone has written a package that can do all this ie. setup easy access to your zaurus when plugged. There is obvioulsy a huge need for it but no interest i guess from developers.

When I plug my C760 into my windows box at work (Z is on tcp over usb) then samba start automatically on the Z and the SD, CF and Home are available via network places.

Don't have to do a thing on the XP side, or on the Z after its put into usb netork mode.

No need fro any extra packages or any setup

Samba Over non-USB has instructions for getting your Z to do wireless networking,

Be aware that the configuration file is /usr/lib/samba/smb.conf NOT /etc/samba/smb.conf.

Works very well.

Forgot to add this:  Get SSH, if also works well 'out of the box' on the Z.  I've been toying with the idea of running Samba over SSH for security reasons.

Hi all, Z-newbie here also.  I'm having a similar problem.  I can't get my WinXP laptop to recognize my Z via drive mapping, or search.  I can telnet/ping the USB IP address, but can't get to it via a drive share.

I've added netbios-ssn and netbios-ns entries to my inetd.conf, and smbd appears to be running on the Z.

I've tried setting PC-Link to both USB -I/O and USB -TCP/IP, neither works.

I must be missing something simple, but I've read just about everything I can find...

Thanks for any ideas!

I also have problem on samba. I'm sure the Wifi working as I can ping from desktop. I chang the smb.conf as for the allowable host and interface. But still doesn't work. I try to start the Samba servies manually but then I found no samba under the path /etc/rc.d/init.d/ Is it the problem? I'm using C3100 with Cacko 1.23. Am I suppose to get the samba somewhere else?

I don't know if mine case is the exception or the norm. But by default samba is not installed on my Akita Cacko 1.23 full. When I installed sambaserver_2.0.7-1_arm.ipk, it didn't complain of anything, so I presume it was not installed prior to that.

I also did a search for it and found samba directories in the some /usr/*.rom directories ... but no binaries that I can run.

Anyway, I installed:

sambaserver_2.0.7-1_arm.ipk
smbmount_0.1_arm.ipk
smbmounter_0.1-2_arm.ipk
smbpasswd_0.1-1_arm.ipk

and configured smb.conf, added user using smbpasswd and it works.

I do find that somehow samba does not show chinese filenames correctly while USB storage shows correctly.

samba is included in the cacko full.  It would not be listed as a separate package or complain when trying to install another samba package.  It is part of the rom and should generally be available from the start.  I seem to remember having to disable it (locking the Z down for internet use on the bluetooth phone)

ic ... but the command to run it is not the typical samba start/stop is it? From above posts, I get the impression it is inetd  xxx? yes?

Confusing ...       did I miss the documentation somewhere?
