It was the wrong kernel after all.  Also, I figured if I am flashing anyway I might as well use the release candidate.  Very cool CoreDump.  I had a hard time thinking up other packages I wanted, as you had included all the core apps I need on my Z.  Nice work.

I must say your mirror is MUCH faster than the main feed. I wonder is that a bandwidth difference or is it just that most people never change their sources list?

openzaurus.org is hosted by sourceforge.net which is known to be slow at times. Most of the time the
(http) servers are quite fast, though. At least from where I live

I also moved the opie-PIM files (addressbook.xml and datebook.xml) to a folder on my SD card and symlinked them to their original locations.  I found that with OZ I could only use the pim apps for so long before running out of space. That solved that.  Now if I could figure out why Kontact can sync the addressbook but hangs trying to sync the calendar then my Zaurus would be the perfect PDA/PMT.

Did you consider moving /home/root to SD? This way all settings including PIM will be kept during upgrades. Hentges ROMs will import a /media/card/root folder automatically after flashing for this exact reason.

I've just discovered a problem with the new "silent" OZ kernels.
You must use the "debug" kernel from the "kernels" folder to use this ROM.
A normal OZ kernel will not work.

I'm working on a solution, but that may not be a simple task.

Strange, I used the non-debug kernel from the directory (donotuse) on your server and it seems to be working.  The first time I tried I had used a kernel from the OZ site and it most certainly didn't work.  Are you saying the non-debug kernels on your site are not working now? If so, is it worth reflashing (I haven't set much up since I flashed) or should I run with what I have now?

If I reflash I will move the /home/root.  Is it as simple as what I already did? Simply moving and symlinking?

If it works for you (ie: the device boots correcty) then there's no need to re-flash.

Ok, false alarm
The problems I experienced were caused by a newer snapshot of OZ than the one
used in the latest release. Everything is perfectly fine in all current releases.

Actually it's even easier. Just make sure that you do not have a /media/card/root directory. During the first boot you'll be asked if you want to move your /root (or /home/root in this case) to the SD card. Answer with "ok" and you are done.

If you already have a /media/card/root directory you'll be prompted on the first boot
if you would like to use it as /home/root. Answer with "ok", the rest will be done automatically.

Of course, even  after "moving" /root, your Z will boot correctly w/o SD card.

Unbelievably awesome!

I just installed the rom last night and everything works.  I've got my thekompany apps back, various sharp apps are working!  This is exactly what the oz install should have been.

Of course I'm left with one question, how do I run applets from the sharp roms?

My Belkin wireless card lights up but does not work.  The WLAN0 says "disconnected" in network settings.  When I remove my CF card and reinsert it,  it is not recognized - neither is the Belkin card recognized as it is in the regular OZ 3.5.3 install.

I also have a "failure to initialize folder" on boot up.

Should I just reflash since no one else is having these problems??

Other than that, this installation is awesome!  The sharp-compat-libs work!  But since I can't connect to the internet or sync wirelessly with Qtopia,  I am bummed out and the fact that makecompat works is worthless to me.

It looks like insertion of ANYTHING in the CF slot is unrecognized other than at first boot up.
Thanks for any help.

Did a reflash - I'm using the 64-0 and same problem with my Belkin wireless card,  but I discovered that I can remove and reinsert my cf card and get recognition of it BEFORE I put in my Belkin card but not after.

When I put in the Belkin card, the light goes on and stays on.  If I do a card ident it appears to show the proper info,  but if I do a card eject at the console,  it hangs the console prompt.  Then after a insertion of the Belkin card there is no recognition of anything when it is put into the CF slot.

So this card works perfectly with the regular OZ 3.5.3 but does not work at all with Hentges.

I guess it's back to the Sharp 3.13 ROM for me unless someone can help me with this.

Solved the problem.  Noticed Pcghost's posting about using wrong kernel.  Finally figured out that I was supposed to use the zImage files from the link on the hentges' web site.
Now my Belkin card works AND I was able to sync with Qtopia 1.7 on Windows.
CoreDump - you da man!!!  Thank you, thank you!

Hi all

You'll find the new ROM  here (changelog)
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=78438\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
[/quote

I have downloaded and  and flashed the rom but  it seems to be that i can not  sync with
qtopia desktop at all , I was waiting for this rom but  if i can't sync  it will be useless .
But again thank you for the effort.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=78705\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I was able to sync with Qtopia 1.7 on Windows by:

In the Zaurus:  Go to Settings tab, click on security, click on the tab that has 2 green arrows in a circle (looks like a "refresh" symbol), set the "accept sync to network to "any",  set the sync software to Qtopia 1.7, click okay.
Now go to your settings network icon, click on it and look for the WLAN0 line.  Make a note of what IP address is there.

Go to Qtopia 1.7 desktop and under File click on settings.  then select the General icon,  put in the IP address that you wrote down from the Zaurus network setting. select the LAN option and check out the other settings are what you want (Desktop overides PDA or whatever).
Then it should automatically work by trying to connect and then you click on the Zaurus that it is okay to connect.

Hope this helps you.  Let me know.

Thank you for your hard work...this is great.

I have a few remaining problems:
1.  Can't get my SanDisk ConnectPlus to work with your install.  I did exactly what I did for the 3.5.3 OZ install and it is recognized by name but no light goes on.  I installed hostap-utils, prism firmware and prism support.  It worked after the install of those files in the regular OZ 3.5.3.

2. I have OpieMail sending but when it receives or if you click on the Inbox,  it gives an "Error initializing folder" message.  Each time it tries to connect to get mail,  that error appears in the taskbar.

Can you help?

Thanks in advance.

I can't comment on your WLAN card since I do not own one of these, sorry. It should work as good or as  bad as in a stock 3.5.3 ROM.

I'll play w/ opie-mail tomorrow and see what I can find out.

Thanks, CoreDump,  for your time.  You did some amazing work.  This ROM is great.

I did a search for the initializing error and it has occurred with other people not using your ROM so it's probably not a problem with your ROM.  No one has posted a solution that I could find.  So you needn't fret over it.

As far as the SanDisk Connect Plus card...maybe someone with that card will try to flash your ROM and let it be known if they have the same problem.  Meanwhile,  I'll fool with it and see if I can solve it (though I'm pretty clueless at this sort of thing).

You're the greatest!

CoreDump:

Followup:

Solved the email problem.  I uninstalled OpieMail and installed QtMail...it works fine for sending and receiving email.

Got an Opera working - sort of - it keeps giving an error if you go to pages with lots of images - have to use the column only mode.  This is despite having followed instructions posted here on how to increase the cache in the opera.ini file.  There must be some other place to correct the cache problem but I haven't found it.

But the main reason I wanted to switch to the OZ ROM is now not a factor - I wanted a working Sandisk Connect Plus card and it STILL is not working with your ROM.

The Z also fails to start after a suspend longer than a few minutes and must be restarted with a soft reset.  Then on bootup I nearly always get a message that there is something wrong with my SD card and it asks to repair it.  I have been saying "yes".

The SanDisk Connect Plus problem has a new twist.  As you may know the SanDisk Connect Plus worked great as a network card in every OZ 3.5.3 install I tried it in.  It just does not work in the Hentges ROM.  But I discovered that,  in a way, it works as a memory card now:

First off Windows XP recognizes the card as a memory card(always has) and I have put some doc files on it,  but the Z has never recognized it as a memory card - when it is inserted the icon pops up with the proper description of the card but if you try to access it in the documents tab or in any application,  it shows NO cf card.
Now in the Hentges ROM (may work in the regular OZ install also - I don't know).  If you go to File Manager and open up the CF card,  it has some directories nested in each other so I tried to copy files to the Sandisk card in File Manager and it worked.  However,  you cannot "see" those files except in FM (and maybe console).  You cannot "see" those files when you connect the Sandisk card back to Windows XP.  Instead in XP only the docs show which I had originally put there.  The docs do not show up in FM on the Z.  Interesting, huh?

Anyway,  there is a document in the PCMCIA folder which describes steps to take to get the SanDisk to work...should I follow these instructions?  Since ALL my installs including the hostap-utils, prism3 firmware and support have been installed to the SD card, I thought I would check with you first before I try these instructions which look like Greek to me:

To make a prism3 card w/ downloadable firmware work, do the following:

Quote
0.) Install hostap-utils
   1.) Add "needs_reset yes" and "needs_firmware hostap_fw_load" to
     the proper interface in /etc/network/interfaces
   2.) echo -e "#!/bin/sh\nifdown wlan0" >> /etc/apm/suspend.d/ifdown
   3.) chmod a+rx /etc/apm/suspend.d/ifdown
   4.) echo -e "#!/bin/sh\nifup wlan0" >> /etc/apm/resume.d/ifup
   5.) chmod a+rx /etc/apm/suspend.d/ifup
Do you think this will get it working?
Here's what it says for ifconfig:

New Hentges Rom With Oz 3.5.3 / Opie 1.2.0
« Reply #28 on: December 28, 2005, 10:17:27 am »
Just got the SL-5500, and installed the Hentges ROM.  Personally I think it's great and saves a newbie like me a ton of time, till I get comfortable with it.

Has anyone gotten tkcmail to work with this ROM?
ipkg gives me an error stating that there is no Architecture defined.

From what I understand tkcmail can be used to work with gmail.

Any help would be greatly appreicated.

Thanks!

Secondary question--

Any luck getting the weird screen problems in console fixed?  It's still leaving bits of letters behind, which plays heck with editing files in Vim, etc.
