Bug report
Now for the bug.

The desktop wasn't frozen! X had died and left the display on VT2, which was an unresponsive, though pretty, piece of eye candy. (I herewith resist the temptation to compare it to my ex-wife. She wasn't that pretty.)  Logging in with ssh and typing 'chvt 1' got the console back. I think it's a bug that there isn't some failsafe mechanism that does a chvt 1 if X dies, and there's no activity, or a login session, on any virtual terminal other than 1. Either that or the X server should scrawl "aaaagggh!" on the screen as it dies.

thank you for listening.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=81350\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Its a know bug that the window manager don't like the time being set etc. under x - espcially the ntpdate stuff.. We are looking into a solution.. But it should not happen with "small" time diffs AFAIK.

Thanks. I know about that one. In this case, it was the card that was corrupted. I've looked over the Cxx hardware forums and there are threads talking about sd cards having problems with large continuous writes. I have certainly been doing a lot of write to mine, lately. But this is the only failure I've seen, so I'm hoping it was an isolated problem. But the way I'm using the machine, if the problem isn;t rare, I'll probably run across it again sometine soon.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=81356\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Are you sure the card was corrupt ?
I have had the same kind of problem several times. It seems all files are gone and there's no way of putting them back, but, a reboot does always fix the problem for me.
Are you using kde stuff ? I think that's the way to run across it again. Load a program that uses kde, suspend your Z, resume the next morning and you may have the lost-files problem again. It doesn't always happen, just sometimes. Short suspends don't seem to cause it.
I had the same problem when using KDE-apps through pocketworkstation and I already had it again using KDE-apps on RC10.
I read something about "eject-insert" of SD and CF cards on "resume". Maybe this causes the problem ? But why doesn't it always happen ?

Unfortunately, yes. I ran fsck on the card and it came up with 20 or so errors. Most of the files ended up intact and placed under lost+found. But the second-level directory structure was completely hosed. I could have tried to piece it back together from what had been salvaged, but that would have been error prone from a variety of angles. Since the data was 100% recoverable by reinstalling the software, I just reloaded the OS and apps. This time I have a backup!

Bug report

A sequel to the sad story above ... I noticed that the time was off ... "Odd," I thought, "I set the timezone ... I typed 'ntpdate my.fave.ntpserver.com' ... The screen went dark ... I tapped the screen, the backlight came back on ... the system went in to [sic] hibernation. Hitting the on button brought me back to the desktop, but now it was frozen....
I've had this same experience multiple times with Kathrin RC10 on SL-C1000.

As my certifications are different than yours, I was not astute enough to figure this out.
This leads me to agree with you that...

I do, however, prefer "AAaarrgghh!".

haven't played with the timezones. though on recollection, you appear to be right about it.

the sd thing happened to me. ultimately i did a complete reinstallation (new G-rom, etc...) fdisked the sd (to use /home on a 100 meg partition on the card). as soon as everything was up, I installed the sd fix--then installed my software.

Does this release include the 2.6 kernel ?

Is there a SDK for it?

Yeah buddy! 8)

The SDK is one of the best features in my opinion. It's really easy to port GTK[+12]* apps. The also have kdelibs from KDE 3.4 ported. I haven't tried to build anything them, yet.

You can find the native SDK in a .img file in the subdirectory for your Z (referenced in the first post in this thread.) If you put that .img in /home.root, it will be mounted by the startup scripts on boot, and the tools will be symlinked into /usr. I haven't tried cross compiling yet. It looks like their cross environment is not up-to-the minute. At least the version number is RC5 whereas we are at RC10. But I figure I can update with the libs from the native kit, and grab headers as needed from the various projects.

Laze: Does that sound like a viable approach? Are you going to update the cross SDK for RC10, or wait for a later release?

The cross SDK is comming anytime soon - but at moment we are busy trying to fix all the bugs.. The RC9 SDK should work.

There is quite a lot in the "rom" as shipped. However the root is writable, so deleting packages is perfectly possible. (Whether it's advisable is up to your judgement. 8)

I don't have a list of the base packages, since I've already loaded a ton of stuff on top.

Anybody figure out how to have more than one wireless setting??  I have my home network set up, and my work network set up.  I have to manually change the settings in wlan.conf to work though.  IE, I comment out the network I'm not at.  I tried to set up wlan0, wlan1 but that doesn't work.

Oh, and anybody figure out how to get kismet to work?

I've been kinda waiting for the "6k revision/update" re the wireless. I assume fixing the networking ui is something that will be done.

Any info re gphoto? or other usb-cam-image-sucking-app/lib setup?  be nice to pull pencam images into gimp directly-- especially when travelling

Problem with SD
===========
My config: 750 with 1gb SD formatted as ext2/3 (happens in either filesystem), rc10

Occasionally the Z "loses" the sd card, expecially when installing packages or running kde. I've applied the sd-fix via ipgk upgrade from outside x, but it did not have any effect on this issue.
If this happens, /mnt/card appears unmounted, and a have to reboot to mount again (mount /mnt/card doesn't do the trick here).
Now the bad thing is: Most of the time, everything works ok after rebooting, but occasionally I lose some dirs on the card. ls -l doesn't list them and in mc I see them in red with a questionmark in front of the entry, e.g.:
/home
/lost+found
/opt
?usr

A fsck results in countless errors leaving me basically with the only option to reinstall the whole thing...

Any idea how to improve this is greatly appreciated!
If you need further details/logs/etc, just ask.

Take care
chris
