Migrate From Palm To Zaurus
« on: May 26, 2005, 05:49:17 pm »
All I want to do is to get all the diary and address data from my Palm (I use Palm Desktop) into the Z. I wouldn't be unhappy to have to use the Sharp apps, but I'd prefer the K-/pi ones.

If I could sync ToDo & notepad that'd be nice but not essential.

Has anyone got a simple guide? I need to know which version of which package on which machine - having tried various versions of qtopid desktop for windows and none sync, I am quite annoyed.

I've read loads of guides, and I am ashamed to admit that I've had a hard time getting my Z to even sync with my Windows desktop properly - using KA/po and KO/pi. I did managed to get part of my address book across, by sync'ing the palm with KO/on my my linux machine and copying the files across and importing them, but it was a horrible bodge.

thanks
Paul

Hi there,

I moved from a palm to zaurus when I first got my 5600 a year and half or two ago.  I think all I did was beam all my data via IR.  Also was able to backup my cellphone's numbers that way to the Z too.  I was using Sharp's apps at the time.  You might want to give that a try, then sync from KDEPIM to sharp DTM or XML (depending on what you're using).  You might be able to sync via IR to KDEPIM, but I haven't tried.

All I want to do is to get all the diary and address data from my Palm (I use Palm Desktop) into the Z.
The simplest way I have found to transfer the address book data form my PalmOS device to my new C3000 was to beam them category by category. You still have some cleaning to do afterward, but that's at least a good start.

For the Datebook, though, I had to use Intellisync. Wasn't easy to setup, didn't work well at first, got it to sync once with Palm Desktop, it has broken since, but eventually I got my agenda stuff transferred. It's probably the worst side of the Zaurus: bad PIM apps, and worse sync options... You'll need some skill, a lot of luck and even more patience to get it to work!

The good thing is that the one time I got Intellisync to work, it transfered my todo as well. The bad thing is that I wasn't able to transfer my memos - mostly because the Zaurus lack a simple memo application like the PalmOS one. I'm trying to manually cut & paste them from a CSV file I exported from the PalmOS to insert them one at a time in IQNotes, but it's a pain (no, IQNotes doesn't have an import function...)

I was luckier with my SplashID data (login, passwords, bank data, etc.) because I was able to export them in a .csv file, modify it a bit on my PC, then re-import the whole stuff in SafeDee. Not 100% perfect, but it was almost the easiest part of transfering my data to the Z!

I used Filez to beam my data from the palm to my zaurus, then used P2Z to convert the data to be used with the Zaurus.

Filez is a Palm filemanager, with it you can beam ANY file from your palm.

p2z is a Perl tool that converts Palm Memo, ToDo, Addressbook and Datebook data to the Zaurus builtin applications. It needs Perl and opie-sh. p2z currently requires you to install p2z, perl and opie-sh to RAM.

read here:

Here are some files I remember needing, although they may not be current I'll post them just in case they help you.

Multisync supports sync on multiple devices such as the Palm and Zaurus.
http://multisync.sourceforge.net/
I haven't tested it but it may be possible to "route" your Palm data to your Z, or maybe backup your Palm data to text files then sync those to the Z.

It seems that MultiSync doesn't (yet) support the new PIM file format of the recent Zaurus devices (including the C3000, for instance) which use DTM instead of XML. Too bad, as it seems otherwise a nice and powerful solution!

I used the Palm Desktop to sync up my Palm data with the Sharp ROM PIM.  I'm able to sync up the address book, calendar, text notes, and todo list all using intellisync with no problems.  I've done this on my 5500 and 6000L.  The only issue you might get is making sure the right device overrides the right place.

Im' not sure if Intellisync is still included with new zaurii, but when I got my 5500 it had the option to sync the Z with Palm Desktop, after syncing with palm desktop, I just switched it to sync with outlook.
