already tried that one and it didn't work  the only way thunderbird works for me currently is under debian which means its slower than running under X/QT busybox.

I did some more experimenting with this and found out the cause of the Japanese display problems I mentioned. Apparently it's a font size issue. I don't know why, but if I increase the font size by a couple of ticks all of the Japanese text displays fine. If I use a smaller setting, it basically leaves some characters out, making it impossible to read (like if every other letter was left out of English words). Strange.

link?

I know you have two mirrors for this but its not up.  I have another question.  If it works on sd, would i be able to run these applications such as deb on a fat partition?  I have not been successfull yet.  I put your project aside until someone would get it to work since my time is limited.  I know it works on ext and was about to try it out till i saw the new update.

I'll comfirm if it does install to my fat card as soon as i get the installer.

The updated version should be available soon...

Make sure you also get the latest debian install script since it will detect what type of partition you are installing to and if its a ext2 partition it will simply install it, but if it is fat, then it will create a loopback filesystem which is ext2 on top of the fat partition.

Hi,

First of all thanks to all, especially Meanie, for putting such a huge effort on this X/Qt smoothie!

I got a 1GB SD and partitioned it into two halves, one FAT and the other EXT2.  Using C1000.

Then I downloaded the latest files and attempted to install the jumbo package on the EXT2 partition (mounted to /mnt/card2) using the command line.  The results are as follows:

Code: [Select]
bash-2.05$ su
# ipkg -d /mnt/card2 install /mnt/card/Documents/xqt_jumbo/xqt-gtk-jumbopack_0.4.3-0.6_arm.ipk
Unpacking xqt-gtk-jumbopack...Done.
Configuring xqt-gtk-jumbopack.../mnt/card2/usr/lib/ipkg/info/xqt-gtk-jumbopack.postinst: /opt/QtPalmtop/share/bin/xqtliblinks: not found
loading libraries ...
generating pango.modules ...
/mnt/card2/usr/lib/ipkg/info/xqt-gtk-jumbopack.postinst: cannot create /etc/pango/pango.modules: directory nonexistent
generating gdk-pixbuf.loaders ...
/mnt/card2/usr/lib/ipkg/info/xqt-gtk-jumbopack.postinst: cannot create /etc/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders: directory nonexistent
/mnt/card2/usr/lib/ipkg/info/xqt-gtk-jumbopack.postinst: /opt/QtPalmtop/share/bin/mozhomefix: not found
X/Qt installed sucessfully.
Done.

Then I restart Qtopia but couldn't see any X/Qt tab or icon, nor in any other tab.  So it seems the installation process fails (non-trivially) at some point, but not "installed successfully" as reported on the screen.

Installing the latest debian install script (0.6) seemed to be fine, but still no X/Qt tab and icons anywhere....

Did I do something wrong here?  Any insight into my case?  I am so eager to get X/Qt run on my Akita!   Thank you so much!

« Reply #208 on: September 12, 2005, 03:38:48 am »
Ok, after several failures I gave up trying to install the X/Qt jumbo package on external cards directly, but finally I got X/Qt plus PocketWorktation installed on both a C860 and a C1000 to a 1GB SD card with an ext2 loopback filesystem and a swapfile automatically created during the installation.

It seems Debian runs noticeably faster on C1000 than C860.

I was really thrilled when seeing Debian loading for the first time.  Kudo to Meanie!

Now comes another question: I changed the path of sources.list in /var/mnt/card/debroot/etc/apt by commenting out the internet sources and add

Code: [Select]
deb file:/home/zaurus/Documents/Install_Files debs
as detailed on Meanie's page, becuase I want to install additional Debian packages locally.  But what remains unclear to me is the way to install additional Debian packages available downloaded (i.e. NOT throught the net).

When I was doing this:

Code: [Select]
# mkdir -p /home/zaurus/Documents/Install_Files/debs
# cp *.deb /home/zaurus/Documents/Install_Files/debs
# cd /home/zaurus/Documents/Install_Files
# dpkg-scanpackages debs /dev/null | gzip > debs/Packages.gz

I received an error simply saying

Code: [Select]
dpkg-scanpackages: command not found
The Packages.gz was still generated, though.  Then I ran PocketWorkstation and tried "apt-get update" and "apt-get install" but nothing was updated nor installed.

Then I googled for several hours looking for a solution but to no avail.

So could someone here please teach me how to get over this problem and enable Zaurus on Debian to run "apt-get install" with the expected result?

NB. I have been trying to get OpenVanilla installed and get it to work with OpenOffice as an input method.  Any idea to achieve this?
