Zaurus-powered Usb External Storage

While 4GB may seem like a lot for a PDA, if you start working with video, you quickly run out of space. What I would like to do is have a small portable hard disk (probably one of the "pocket sized" variety, not using a 2.5" hard disk) that I could use as a place to permenantly store video files. I would then use the C3100's USB port (with host cable) to connect to the drive and copy off a file or two as the mood struck me. It wouldn't be something that I would use for long periods of time, so the effect on battery life would probably be minimal. The problem is finding whether there are any hard disks that can actually be powered by the USB port on the Zaurus. I want to be able to do this operation on the go, without using an AC adapter. I thought I had read somewhere on the forums that someone had a mini hard drive working without an adapter. Anyone know what this might be?

Also, since the newer iPods have USB cables available, I was wondering if it was possible to use an iPod for this. Since it has a battery, it might not have power problems. Of course, since I'm a Mac user, my iPod is Mac formatted, which would probably cause problems... But I may upgrade to one of the 60gb models in the future, leaving my current 40GB one free to be reformatted.

You may not be in luck - if the C3100 has the same USB port as the C3000/C1000.

This is the reason why it works on the SL-6000 but not on the C series.

I have an Archos Arcdrive 20GB too (pocketable) but sadly I need a powered hub to make it work with the C1000.

Ican confirm that the SL-6000 at least seems to work great with USB-powered devices. I plugged a USB-powered iomega zip250 drive into my SL6000 and after mounting /dev/sda4 I could access files on the drive.

The USB on the C3000 and its brothers actually does provide power, but only the 500mA that is  standard for USB power. The problem with 2.5" hdd is that they require more than that much power to spin up. Some USB ports on Desktops and Laptops provide overcurrent so they actually output more than the standard 500mA. Thus most of the 2.5" USB enclosures provide funny adaptors to either get more power from a second USB port or the PS/2 port. The C3000 does not have an additional power source so the 2.5" disk cannot power up. Once they are running, they only require 500mA which the C3000 can provide. According to the doc for the 1.8" drive, it only consumes 450mA even for spinup of the disk so it should work provided the specs are correct and they weren't lying.

I should try my Archos FM Recorder 20(gb).  It's INTERNALLY powered by it's Li-Ion battery.

 But this leads back to iCruise's question about the iPod...

This guy (page is in Japanese) has apparently connected his iPod mini to his c1000 successfully. Sounds promising. I suppose the iPod would have to be Windows formatted though.

Using the USBhost cable, when it tries being able to connect, being recognized, properly as the device because the る, with the terminal,

I doint what that says particularly - wether hewas successful or not, but I have tried my iPod Mini on the zaurus, and no luck. Nothing as simople as a mount command works on this. It is iPod for Windows so...

I read Japanese, and he says that it worked with no problem. He just connected the cable and entered mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/usbstorage in the terminal.

nilch, do you have your iPod set to enable use as a hard disk? I imagine you would have to do that for it to show up as a mass storage device when connected to any kind of computer, including the zaurus.

Just a quick note on the usb iPods.  I just bought my wife a 4gig mini.  It won't mount on usb 1.  It will charge and that's it.  I can plug it in to my powerbook and it will mount on usb2 and her pc which is usb2 and there are no problems.  I didn't get a chance to try it out on my Z and it's at her office now...

I tried the Archos FM Juke.  It attemts to charge itself off the usb (and the Zaurus seems to try to charge it...even when it's running on it's battery).

 It shows up in the usb que and is identified quite handily, but I can't seem to mount it properly.  I think I tried setting it to sda2 as mentioned above, but I will try again tommorow, as will I try Ev1l's auto-mounting package.

 Can't do it tonight though, I just installed the extended power battery i the archos and it needs it's inagural charge...
