Im A Linux And Zaurus Newbie..
« on: August 09, 2005, 09:02:31 pm »
Well...I'm taking the plunge and will switch from using PocketPC to Linux.

Only problem is, I'm a Linux newbie.

I'm still debating wether to get the 3100 or the 3000. I know of the different specs, but most people say the difference isn't worth the extra price.

Now...I hate and HATE the GUI. I understand there's an open-source project called OpenZaurus, which has some nice interfaces and is a complete flash of the device (which, even following those instructions, I'm not sure I'd be able to do..yes, newbie, I'm pretty good with PC's/Windows though, so I'm not totally computer illiterate)

Are there any others for the 3100/3000?

Has anyone tried a CF bluetooth adapter and dialed into a GSM network using a BT cellphone (my business requires me to have data on the go).

Any reputable vendors that post around here? I like buying from vendors who frequent forums, as I can tlak directly to them

I'm from Canada, if that matters much in shipping and from which vendors I can buy from.

Thanks,
Anthony

Thanks for the help!

Which CF bluetooth card do you have?

And do your themes work with the 3100 also, or only the 3000?

in your opinion, does the 3100 make the 3000 outdated? Is it significantly faster?

I would save about 200$ U.S. if I went with the 3000.

Thanks,
Anthony

The only spec that seem to have changed between the 3K and 31K is the flash state. The 3k has only 16MB available and the 31k has 128MB. Which is for storage IIRC.

If you are interested in flashing new roms and not useing the harddrive space for them get a 3100. Im sure that there will still be lots of rom development for the 3000, but I think  the C1000/c3100 will have a longer, and an arguably more full development life.

forget the c3000

Your choice should be c3100 or c1000
Why don't you buy a c1000 and a MicroDrive Later ? it won't make any difference.

I'm from Canada, Vancouver

Bought 3100 off Conics in Japan one month ago: fast shipping and NO duties, for some unknown reason.

Bought Socket BT card bought from Cdn company http://www.cendirect.com/  Awesome prices, awesome service, fast shipping on everything I have bought from them.

Bought dlink 660 off ebay in US for wifi: worked instantly with no configuration.

BT and gprs works like a charm with Rogers with socket bt card. (Took me a while to get it configured, but that's because I was not paying close enough attention to what I was doing and made some stupid config mistakes.)

This is my first Zaurus and I am not familiar with the 3000, so I cannot comment on whether the 3100 is worth the extra cost.

I'm using the stock rom and I am happy with it. I have no urge, yet, to change that.

Overall though, after being a Palm'er for 8 years, this unit is sweet. Strange that it's not more popular.

Cresho, you said you're using the 1000 until a new Zaurus comes out, you actually have any reason to believe that there will be one soon? I don't want to buy one now only to see it outdated in a couple of months..

1) mainstream development on these machines are ramping up, so they are really starting to become more useful to the average person.

2) using the zaurus history, it would be in character for sharp to release a new Z in late fall (november).  No other reason to suspect.

3) even if a new one comes out in november, it probably won't see mainstream development for a while.  This means unless you like the stock japanese converted to english rom, you won't get the full software potential that the 1k/3k/3.1k are starting to enjoy.
I'm now an iphone user and use my zaurii as serial terminals, perl and shell scripting and when I need 640x480 screens
