Japanese Input Support In Oz?
« on: August 24, 2005, 10:00:27 am »
I've spent a good amount of time googling, and I cant find anything about Japanese input support under OZ. Can anyone tell me if there is a way to add the japanese input method / fonts to OZ/Opie?

I currently am using Cacko in Japanese w/ all apps modified to use english, and find this to be ideal  because I can use Jisho & KanjiNirvana easily. I'd like to upgrade to OZ/Opie. Is there a similar setup for OZ/Opie that will allow me to use Jisho & Kanji Nirvana w/ japanese input?

Thanks!

I haven't seen anything that would enable this.  You can't use the Qtopia input method from other (gcc-2.95-based) ROMs, b/c the sharp-compat-libs only works on executable files (input methods are shared libraries).

Until someone adds something like anthy or nunome to OZ, I think we're stuck as far as Japanese input goes.

Thanks for the info =)

I don't really understand the issues involved with GCC compatibility libraries. Is it possible to create a compatibility library for shared libraries? Is there a place where I can read more about how sharp-compat-libs works?

It's not possible - use the search, I've explained it in several posts. I would rather encourage you to add japanese IM to OE to make them appear in future OE-built distributions.

someone is working on getting numone (or however you spell it) in to OE, which should support kanji via qt input methods.

Thanks for all the useful information.
Maybe we can take this back a step...
Is it possible to get the japanese fonts installed so that kanji/kana can be displayed?

KanjiNirvana seems have its own input area that doesn't rely on the OS, so I'm guessing I could still look up kanji by drawing them, as long as I could read the kanji matches returned, and the Kun/On readings...

Nunome sounds promising. Maybe a simpler intermediate step would be getting japanese keyboard input (ie: type 'ka' and get a か)? KanjiNirvana does a simplified version of this too.. Maybe some code could be borrowed from the sourceforge project?

Mickeyl, you sound pretty knowledgable and involved in this sort of thing already. Is there an IRC channel you hang out in, or that you can recommend I visit to meet some people who would share this goal?

There is a package called IMKit-Anthy at the Zaurus-ja project site.  I'm not sure whether or not it works on OZ, though.  This is the only other solution I know of.

That is great news--please let me know if I can help test the packages. . .

On another note, if you need Japanese input you might want to check out Pocketworkstation, which lets you run a Debian installation inside X/Qt.  You should be able to apt-get any Japanese software (scim, kinput2, etc...) you need.

I think there are a couple unicode fonts available via Package Manager. I'm currently using "Unifont" and I'm pretty happy with it. I also have one called "Japanese" installed, but I haven't tried it yet.

xamindar (or anyone else): do you have any other japanese language tools working under OZ? I'm thinking about trying to get a dictionary working with just romanji, to help me in class for the time being. Any recomendations?

Well, I ended up going back to a Sharp rom (watapon on my 5600) as I really need a japanese lookup tool for class.  While OZ is very nice it juast didn't have the most important thing I use my Z for.  I guess there is just not enough demand for it.

But watapon is nice.  It doesn't contain all the unused things that the default sharp rom contains.
And I am able to have anthy and nunome to allow me to use the keyboard to enter *kana.  I'm still working on the fonts though.

Oh, to answer your question, I installed zten and the japanese dictionary file that is talked about in another thread and it appears to lookup japanese words by using romaji input. [a href=\"http://www.hloeffler.info/epwing/]http://www.hloeffler.info/epwing/[/url]
Give it a try, it should work.

It looks like imkit-anthy should work on OZ:

Install this software to OpenZaurus/Opie is currently not recommended. It will be supported well by next version (0.4.0). Some configuration matter should be solved to support It.
It is currently at 0.4.5

Give it a try and let me know.

I was able to get QPOBox working with Opie.

I posted details and ipks (for spitz) on the following public wiki (warning: Japanese):
