NO CF Memory, only SD. Is there a way to Flash?
« on: February 04, 2004, 07:29:19 am »
Before I go out and buy a CF card to do some ROM flashing, I was wondering if something has changed with being able to flash from SD. I have a 256MB SD but do not own a CF card. I have read all the FAQ\'s and I am well aware that everything explicitly states you need CF not SD, but the engineer in me wants to do it the hard way if its possible. (Read Cheap LOL )

Should I go out and buy a cheap 16MB or 32MB CF card to keep around for flashing or can I accomplish my tasks by using my SD card?

I am interested in working with the OZ and Tkc ROM\'s in particular.

Also, Is 16 or 32 big enough, or should I go up to something larger to save me some hassle down the road.

Thanks for any help....

[Just realized that this may not be the right forum topic to post this under, my appollogies]

The SL-5500 can only be flashed with a CF card. The Sharp ROMs have a Windows-based flash utility, but they broke that with the latest ROM. You\'ll need a 32MB CF card BTW.

The SL-5600 has a completely different boot loader which allows it to be flashed with either a CF or SD card. I think there is even an option to use internal memory.

I haven\'t looked into it in too much detail as I can\'t translate Japanes, but it\'s possible to Flash the Cxx0 series by SD, CF, USB and a fourth option which I haven\'t deciphered yet.

This all of course is dependant on the ROM you\'re trying to flash. I know that the Cacko ROM\'s have their own special bootloader and that it\'ll boot from at least CF and SD cards.

I recommend a 64MB CF card for flashing new ROMs, they are cheap and they fit the ROM files just perfect. If you need to do a NAND restore a 256MB card is required (encompassing all current Zaurus models).

The forth option on the update (ala Flash) screen for the CXX0 series is \"return\" which takes you back to the initial screen.

You can do a NAND backup/restore with SD card on the C760 and C860 (haven\'t tried the otheres!) if you remove the CF crad from the machine. The NAND backup/restore checks the CF card first if there is no file the proces stops with an error message, if there is no CF card it checks the SD card.
