Samba No Samba?
« on: September 25, 2005, 02:16:02 pm »
Hi

Since installing Cacko I can no longer connect to the Z from osx 10.4.2.

No connection through usb or wlan. Previously with a sharp rom this worked fine.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling but with no luck.

Have also tried the troubleshooting suggestions in Zmac sync help.

Console log:

Hm,
WLAN and the USB driver have nothing in common. So it might be two different issues.

For USB:
* did you set the Zaurus to client USB mode (in host mode or USB-Disk mode it might conflict)?
* did you check the network settings on both devices?
* did you reboot the Mac after installation?
* ... anybody else an idea?

One hint to all: please don't install the the full zmacsync_arm.ipk on Cacko - just the dtm2xml_arm.ipk. Otherwise it will try to install a second OpenSSH system where one already comes with Cacko. This seems to damage other settings.

For WLAN:
* Samba over WLAN is not enabled by default. This requires changing the smb settings.

Hi

Thanks for the reply.

Yes I have tried all the usb configurations on the zaurus.

Cannot even mount a disk as usb storage (is that the right term?).

Network settings are at default and I have tried several others.

Have rebooted several times.

Occasionally it will connect via Zmacsync but always fails when I try to mount t he disk on the desktop.

Hm,
then it might be an issue on the Mac side.

* Which Mac model do you use (OS is 10.4.2)?
* which version of AJZaurus?
* do you have connected other USB devices?

Hi,

the mac is flat panel imac 800mhz

all other usb connections are fine, camera printer,etc.

The macsync and ajzaurus are the latest ones- from your site I believe.

really got me mystified as it has worked well in the past with a sharp rom.

I have used onyx to repair and reset the mac.

the cacko is the latest 'lite' version

Just tried again and connected the z via usb - checked the console output -no connection

i switched off the z and back on again - the console shows the ajzaurus driver loading.

also the pc link window on the zaurus opens automatically - currently set to usb-i/o default

zmacsync shows connection became available and i can open a terminal to the z and issue

commands. When i try to mount the z on the desktop i get operation failed.

Ok,
that is a good point to look at. The timeout is a good hint that the SMB subsystem does not identify the Zaurus.

Please try to SMB-mount the device directly through Finder (Connect to Server menu).

And you can try to call 'findsmb' on the Mac terminal.

One idea comes to my mind: Did you already install the latest security update from Apple? It does not say that it modifes anything in the SMB or Networking system - but who really knows?

Hi,

Connect to server will not connect even though the zmacsync is showing a connection.

terminal gives:

Last login: Mon Sep 26 10:55:24 on ttyp1
Welcome to Darwin!
[Mac:~] keithb% findsmb

                                *=DMB
                                +=LMB
IP ADDR         NETBIOS NAME     WORKGROUP/OS/VERSION
---------------------------------------------------------------------
192.168.0.11    ZAURUS        +Unknown Workgroup
[Mac:~] keithb%

it finds the zaurus wlan address but not the usb address.
when i try connect to server on this address i get:

some data in smb://192.168.0.11 could not be read or written

i did install the latest mac update as i thought it may help in some way as it was not working before.

Here is what my console on the Mac says (with a Sharp ROM):
Code: [Select]
hns:~ hns$ findsmb

 Â                               *=DMB
 Â                               +=LMB
IP ADDR         NETBIOS NAME     WORKGROUP/OS/VERSION
---------------------------------------------------------------------
192.168.129.201 ZAURUS         [WORKGROUP] [Unix] [Samba 2.0.7-ja-2.2]
hns:~ hns$
The samba config file on the Zaurus (with Sharp ROM) says:
Code: [Select]
# cat /home/root/usr/lib/samba/smb.conf
[global]
# workgroup is either a domain name or a workgroup name
 Â       workgroup = WORKGROUP
 Â       log file = /dev/null
#
# encrypt passwords is required for Win98, NT and Windows 2000
#
 Â       encrypt passwords = yes

 Â       coding system = utf8
 Â       client code page = 932
 Â       force create mode = 0755
 Â       strict sync = yes
 Â       sync always = yes

 Â       interfaces = usbd0
#       wins support = yes
[system]
 Â       comment = System Folder
 Â       path = /root/samba
 Â       read only = no
 Â       browseable = no
 Â       guest ok = yes
 Â       force user = root
[home]
 Â       comment = for User Data
 Â       path = /home/samba
 Â       short preserve case = no
 Â       read only = no
 Â       guest ok = yes
 Â       force user = zaurus

#
[code]
The Zaurus has Settings/PC Link as follows:
Mode Setting: PC Link Setting
Hotname: zaurus
USB IP: 192.168.129.201
Connections: USB - TCP/IP (advanced)
Is there anything different to that on your Zaurus?

BTW: can you ssh to the Zaurus?

hereis my samba conf

i have tried to edit the workgroup name on this but the system wil not allow any changes to this file even logging in as root.

[global]
# workgroup is either a domain name or a workgroup name
   workgroup = ZAURUS
   log file = /dev/null
#
# encrypt passwords is required for Win98, NT and Windows 2000
#
   encrypt passwords = yes

   coding system = utf8
   character set = 866
   client code page = 866
#   preserve case = yes
#   short preserve case = yes

   force create mode = 0755
   strict sync = yes
   sync always = yes

   interfaces = usbd0 eth0 bnep0 irda0 irda1
#   wins support = yes
   browseable = yes
#   hosts allow = 192.168.

   null passwords = yes
#   guest account = zaurus
   map to guest = Bad User

   socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192

[system]
   comment = System Folder
   path = /root/samba
   read only = no
   browseable = no
   guest ok = yes
   force user = root

[home]
   comment = for User Data
   path = /home/samba
   short preserve case = no
   read only = no
   guest ok = yes
   force user = zaurus

seems quite different to me.

yes i can ssh to the from mac to z

Ok, then it is neither a driver nor WLAN nor TCP/IP issue but a samba config issue.

One more idea:
does ps -ef show 'nmbd' and 'smbd' after plugging in USB? These are the naming daemon and the samba daemon.

BTW: which Cacko version did you install? You could also post a question about samba config to the ROMs Support and Discussion forum.

hi

ps -ef does show nmbd and smdb after plugging in usb

sometimes have to switch z on and off a  few times tho'

the cacko version is 1.22   lite version

not sure wether to install the hotfix?

bit concerned that the samba config is so different ie workgroup name

i may try and subtitute yours if i can figure out how to write over the original

as the partition is mounted read only!

ok

managed finally to edit the samba config file (smb.conf)
after much messing around i managed to change the name of the
workgroup to match the network.  i also edited out the interfaces line
in the file. now i can connect fine from the mac over wi-fi.

havent tried zmac sync yet but pretty sure i can get this to work.
