You Guys Ever Wonder...
« on: September 25, 2005, 03:57:21 pm »
you ever whonder why nobody ever really goes into the darn elsi or how to docs?  Well, it would help if you added links to the oe forums next to the title.  I must of spent like 2 years reading forums and i never ever realized that we had a space for software and how to docs.  The software seems to be improving but the how to docs lacks a great deal since people post in forums and do not add any refference to the documentation of how to.

solution...
by implimenting these shortcuts ontop of the oe forums, people will know about them and try to head to these directions.  also, by adding a link to how to docs and asking people to reffer documentation or "how-to's" to the oesf how do documentation.

also, you need to add links to each site and have it pop open in the same window so you can seemlessly dive around without opening up multiple windows between elsi, eosf, zaurususergroup, and the oeforums.  each of those domains also needs links to open on  self window.  I wasnt aware of these other locations until recently believe it or not.

Just to give you guys an idea, i have had over 250 downloaded transfers for the snes alone.  Some of the ipk's in them are not available anywhere along with the specific files.  I spent 2 weeks searching around.  NO documentation about how to install untill i read every single thread related to snes installation available in the oe forums.  If this is the case, nobody knows about the oesf docs on "how-to".

This is not going to work until

1. all the sites link seemlessly
2. all refference within the forums points to the how to documentation
3. software is updated in elsi and used that as a download location as well
4. software within elsi points to how to documentation to where the how to explains what are the dependent files needed to run a specific job.
5. instructions on how to post in forums with refference to these locations with software.

From what i seen, people post about ipk's that are not in the elsi at all!!!!!
nobody updates them, and nobody updates how to docs because............nobody is really aware.  so i suggest on top.....software download and how to docs in the forums and the other domains post links ontop that refference between each domain with all the domains available within a small bar representing the whole oesf and this should help alot.  this is important to the newbies!  we have alot of them.

i have 5 modified programs like

clipboard applet
memory applet
extra taskbar applet

more too

i would like to upload but i have a problem

-----------------------------------------------------------
"You must now upload the files to the server.
The ftp address for the server is:
The login is anonymous.

The following formats are allowed: .ipk, .tar.gz, .tgz, .gz, .zip
The format is: <unixname>.<extension>
An example is: clipboardapplet.ipk

Checking for status of file..

Warning: opendir(/public/ftp/incoming/elsix/): failed to open dir: Permission denied in /public/vhost/e/elsix/html/mod.php on line 480
Project Files Not Found.

Make sure you have uploaded the file and you follow the correct format outlined above.

Once you are done checking your file, please hit your refresh button."

-----------------------------------------------------------

Now where am i suppose to upload these files too?  ftp server has no name and login is anonymous and how about username.

very needed!

i have a mame project i want to put up when i have it complete as well.

Boy, when you rant, you rant!  Some of your points are true, while others are not.

You are right when you say that we need more links between the sites, especially in the forums.  Many of our members have been around since before we switched the forums from ZUG to OESF (Jan '05), so most know about the ZUG and use it as a kind of 'portal' to most things Zaurus.  Plenty of proper links on the ZUG.  But I agree, the forums, ELSI, and the OESF site needs more links/cross reference.  We'll work on that.

Regarding no one updating the ELSI or OESF How to Docs.... this is just not true.  I've been somewhat impressed with how much the How to Docs have been updated after we moved them to the media wiki software.  As well with the ELSI... even though there are still a few challenges with the site, it doesn't go unused, and people are working on updating the site and fixing the issues.

Of course, we could always use help.  So if anyone has the technical ability and the desire to help, please just contact dz or myself.
