Isn't temporary storage the 10meg /tmp setup in ram upon boot?
Code: [Select]
echo "mount tmpfs"
mount -t tmpfs -o size=10m none /dev/shm
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=114389\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Yeah, and I thought it was only like 1 meg in sharp rom as well.  10 megs seems like a lot but maybe some program needs it.

I have one more question.  I looked through this thread and didn't see it discussed yet.  The "current" view in the netsetup app doesn't work.  It shows the mac address and ESSID but no signal strength info.  I just reflashed for the fourth time and it has been the same every time.  What is missing?

I just spent more time than I would like to admit getting my networking set up. Make sure eeverything is set up on the access point side like the mac address list, wep key, or whatever you might use. On the client side set up a static IP just to take one more variable out of the picture. Make sure you are set up to match your access point. I set mine to a specific ESSID, infrastructure, and shared key. Depending on the access point you have, you might be able to find hints to these settings in the AP setup. My stubling block was that the ESSID is case sensitive. Once I finally entered the name in caps it was able to connect. Until then my CURRENT tab acted like yours.

No, I wasn't clear enough.
I can connect just fine.  Everything in cacko works great.  I have three different access points (home, work, friend) set up on it and I am able to connect to them all.  That "wireless monitor" program will show info when I am connected.  The only problem is the netsetup program its self does not show info.  In fact, when I click on the current tab the whole zaurus seems to slow to a crawl.

Has all interest been lost in creating a full release of cacko 1.23 for the c3000?  I thought I saw one mention that it was not going to be upgraded for older models but it seems to have been released for every c model exept teh 3000.  Just wondering.
When chaos reigns, pause, reflect and reload the OS to something more stable, like any unix/linux flavor.

Once in a while, I see posts by new Zaurus owners on problems with the Cacko installation process, most probably due to the Japanese maintenance menu.
So I thought I'd supplement Mazlovsky's original instructions with screenshots (and some minor editing) where relevant.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IMPORTANT: This ROM requires a flash partition at least 32 MBytes in size!
Make sure to repartition your internal flash before updating ROM!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Installation:

1. Extract the 3 files - initrd.bin tools.tar updater.sh - to the root of your CF or SD/MMC card.

2. Make sure that Zaurus isn't plugged into AC power.

3. Remove battery for at least 5 seconds.

4. Replace battery (replace battery cover, lock cover), plug in AC power.

5. Press and hold the "OK" button on the keyboard.

6. Turn the power on, you should see the Maintenance Menu.
[img]http://www.aonorokugo.net/rokugo/misc/zaurus/maintenance_menu_translation/maintenance_menu.jpg\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]

7. Now Plug in the Power Cord.
You will get an error if it isn't plugged in!

8. Select option 4 (flash/update).
[img]http://www.aonorokugo.net/rokugo/misc/zaurus/maintenance_menu_translation/update3.jpg\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]

9. You then have several options including CF and SD (this screenshot differs according to your Zaurus model)
[img]http://www.aonorokugo.net/rokugo/misc/zaurus/maintenance_menu_translation/update2.jpg\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]

10. Choose either CF or SD, depending on which media you put the files in.

11. You are now in the "Cacko ROM Installer" start menu. Select "3 NAND Flash Utils"
[img]http://www.aonorokugo.net/rokugo/misc/zaurus/cacko_instal_pics/c1.jpg\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]

12. Select "1 Resize root partition"
[img]http://www.aonorokugo.net/rokugo/misc/zaurus/cacko_instal_pics/c2.jpg\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]

13. Enter 32 when prompted for root partition size.
[img]http://www.aonorokugo.net/rokugo/misc/zaurus/cacko_instal_pics/c3.jpg\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]

12. Flash will be repartitioned and Zaurus will reboot.
[img]http://www.aonorokugo.net/rokugo/misc/zaurus/cacko_instal_pics/c4.jpg\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]

13. Repeat steps 2-10 again and wait for the start menu.

14. Now select "1 Install new ROM" and wait.
[img]http://www.aonorokugo.net/rokugo/misc/zaurus/cacko_instal_pics/c5.jpg\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]

15: Format your user partition (select YES):
[img]http://www.aonorokugo.net/rokugo/misc/zaurus/cacko_instal_pics/c8.jpg\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]

And finally, reboot your Zaurus when ROM installation is complete.

So, here's what I have: sl-c1000 running Cacko heavy 1.23. All works fine.
Question is: I have a 8gb Seagate CF microdrive formatted Fat32. All this works fine too. The microdrive properties when viewed under windows XP show it to be 7.44 GB, when I check it's size on the Cacko memory applet it tells me it's 7.79gb.
So, where are the "missing" MBites? "Show all files" is enabled in Windows XP by the way, so it seems there are no hidden files lurking around.

They're probably not missing, but measured in a different way. Just like a hard drive manufacturer calls a drive that shows up as 74 gigs and 80 gig drive, the way cacko and windows calculate the amount of gigabytes could be different. See how close the amount is in bytes, perhaps?

Storage tab has the following:

Internal Disk : 3971808 Kb
Temporary Storage : 10240 Kb

and then of course plugging in any CF or SD cards will appear below that.

OK, this means that Qtopia version on 3100 doesn't show you the internal flash storage like it does on C1000. Sysinfo is just using Qtopia library functions, it doesn't query mounts directly to look up the storage.

Funny how I never noticed this issue until now... but it is a HUGE one in my opinion for any 3100 users.  Here is just one example that made it clear to me.

Clean cacko 1.23 full flash.  Go to Settings tab, then choose Appearance.  Change the theme to QPE for example, and click OK.  After update choose Appearance again and choose ZBlue again.  Notice wallpaper doesn't come back.  Go to design tab and turn on wallpaper, then click the "none" box next to it.  Because the Z does not see the internal flash the only 'path' to choose from is the Internal Disk.  Thus I can never set the default wallpaper back as I have NO access to internal flash.

I wonder how many other system functions this issue breaks... it would explain some other random problems that only seem to pop up after customization.

I think the wallpaper is in your Documents folder under Image_Files.  At least that's where I found it.  I find it hard to believe that anything other than the sysinfo application is unable to see the internal flash.  I am still able to install to internal flash for example.  But I guess it is possible.

I can install ( and do ) to internal flash as well.  I wonder if the factory image acts the same way, might restore back and verify.

These instructions do not work with the 3100....what am I doing wrong? I am doing exactly what is said above. When I press and hold the OK button and turn the power one after following the previous steps, it only reboots normally.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

Take out the battery and disconnect the external power and then let it sit for like 5 minutes.  After a while, put the battery back in, connect the ac and hold the OK button.  While holding OK turn the unit on.

Thanks Zamindar, but does not work.
I let the unit sit battery-less for more than 5 minutes, insert the battery and door, plug in the AC, press down on the center button that says "OK" and hold it, then I press the on button....I'm tried 400 times with different combinations of the above and it still boots up normally. My unit must be different, I guess.

The following step is required for 3100:

"Turn the zaurus over and flip the battery case switch to “Unlocked”. Remove the battery cover, and find the small reset microswitch on the left. The battery cover or the stylus can be used to press it."

Also, make sure you only press the "OK" portion of the circle and not the outer circle.

Maslovsky's instructions are fine, works for me everytime.

You don't need to complicate things by using the reset switch. Just make sure you press and hold the centre "OK" button ONLY, then push the ON button once with your other hand, and DON'T let go of the OK button until the Maintenance Menu appears.

Alternatively you can just let the Zaurus boot up normally, then from the QPE desktop start menu, select the small green icon to reboot, then immediately press and hold the OK button until the zaurus reboots into the MAintenance Menu.
