Wish List For OZ
« on: February 09, 2004, 02:36:56 pm »
I have to admit, OZ has been my favorite ROM since my 5500 days.  But off late I\'m using Proto\'s excellent tkc ROM and I\'m very satisfied.

I always felt OZ is almost there...if a few more apps could be fixed, I\'d switch.

So here goes my list!

Ability to use NetFront on OZ or a stable konquerer with NetFront like features

A good mail client like the one on sharp rom

All Hancom apps should work

A decent Media player (audio/video)

VNC

Auto rotation on C7xx series

PDF viewer

Zoom

Of course I\'m sure most of the apps in the above list is probably working on OZ but a dedicated feed for OZ compatible apps in the lines of Proto\'s Rom would help a lot of frustrated souls in search of compatible ipkgs!

Where does one get hold of netfront?

I\'ve not tried the powerpoint viewer, but Hancom Word and Sheet work fine for me.

As you said OZ rather than Opie, how\'s about xmms and mplayer?

VNC

Client is fine. I\'ve not tried the server, is this what you mean?

PDF viewer

QPdf2???

Or perhaps just a HowTo for newbies? I\'m happy to write one and submit it to the HowTos here. What else needs to be included?

How about info on configuring a wireless network card w/ wep?
I know about the issue with having to load up the one module hostap_crypt_wep  manually, but also there is no front end that I saw in the Network setup to plug in your wep keys and ssid.  \'Course, this hasn\'t bothered me, because I know to search out and edit the appropriate files under the /etc/pcmcia directory, but a newbie would know where to start, and I saw no other mention on OZ\'s site about where to enter your wep keys.  Of course, my appologies if it is there and I missed it (and even moreso if there is a wep config option in the Network setup app that I keep overlooking), i\'ve been known to miss the glaring obvious before :-).
Also, I initially couldn\'t get my CF memory card to work, I had to replace all instances of \"bind ide-cf\" with \"bind ide_cf\" in /etc/pcmcia/config.

Here\'s another:  IMAP-SSL and POP3-SSL support in the mail client.  (yes, I\'m aware of stunnel, but its not useful for me)

1) Netfront - Not going to happen in an official release. GCC3 isn\'t binary compatible with GCC2
2) Opiemail is in the current CVS tree for Opie, so it will be in the next release
3) Hancomm isn\'t going to happen. Once again, binary compatibility. Sharp also has a proprietary  library that causes problems
4) Opieplayer2 is pretty nice when it actually works  Hopefully that will get more testing for the next release
5) VNC. There should be time to get the server up to date  by the time OZ releases again
6) Autorotation works fine in opie head
7)  QPDF2 is pretty nice, we should add that to the build system
8) Zoom, probably not going to happen in the next release. Too many hardware specifics and the time would be better spent making everything work are 640x480

Hey that\'s great!  It didn\'t last time I looked, but granted that was in 2003.  I should have double-checked before posting.   :?

Eh my only really good complaint is opie-mediaplayer, I just cannot seem to get it working in 3.3.5, I finally got it installed after getting a missing lib error for awhile, and now I cannot seem to diagnose the problem, I will try some more later.

xmms doesn\'t seem to work. I\'ve not looked into it.

mplayer should work fine. What have you been doing and what has it not been doing?

If everything in that list comes to pass plus if the merging of the ROM developers occurs then I know I won\'t have to worry about support of my Z for a long time.  You guys are awesome.
