Gravity And A C3100
« on: November 29, 2005, 01:59:48 pm »
My C3100, which I have had only 4 weeks, picked an argument with gravity today and lost.

I was standing in a supermarket car park scanning for wireless networks using kismet, as you do, and dropped it onto the very hard ground from about waist height. It was in PDA mode with the screen folded over the keyboard and the shock caused it to reboot ???

I waited for the reboot to finish and it seemed to be working and does seem to be in full working order still. There are a few minor scuff marks on the screen surround, barely noticeable, but the corner of the battery cover has a small crack. Probably the point of impact.

Does anybody know where I might get a new battery cover (I'm in the U.K.) ? Oh - and a wrist strap.

I must say that they seem to be fairly rugged especially as the hard drive is still working. I'm hoping there will be no faults showing up at a later date.

I can't remember if posted this...

but a few months back my C3000 jumped off of the top of my fridge. The fall was about 6 feet on to a tile floor. No visible damage. It works just fine, but it had a rattle.

I poped the Z open to find a small piece of metal flopping around, removed it and all has been well.

I'm glad to hear that a powered on Z has survived a 3 or 4 foot drop!

Haha just like when you put something back together and you find extra parts!

Barry, did you buy from a retailer (trisoft or such)?  Have you consulted with them?  Also conics.net has covers for the previous clamshells, he might have an idea of how to get them for yours.

Thanks for the link - they have a good list of spares.

I did email them but either they don't understand English (and I don't understand Japanese) or they don't send to the U.K. - I didn't get a reply.

my C3100 has a tiny lil scratch on the front near the on/off button because it slipped off my hands when i was trying to put it away and it slit across the train. usually my wristband would had prevented that, but you have to take it off to put it away

All these posts of flying Zaurii make me think the following:

(i) There is a design "feature" that makes Zaurii airborne but I can't put the finger on what it is exactly ("levitation drive"?)
(ii) This feature was addressed by Sharp engineers with some sort of invisible landing gear or force field that protects Zaurii from hard landings.   Who wants to test if the "landing gear" will work for a 20 foot drop?

SL-C3100 (from PriceJapan.com): modified Sharp Rom (couldn't make Japanese input work in Cacko Rom)

I now have a levitation attachment (wrist strap and a neck strap).    I'm not going to take the 'belt and braces' approach - i.e. I shan't use them both at the same time.

No more bouncing Zaurus for me (I hope)!
