woohoo, just got my 860 from Brando !!!!

WOW!!!!!!!!!!

First off a shameles plug for Brando.  First for having the best price I could find.  Email respose was super fast for the several questions i had prior to ordering, and I recieved email confirmations at reciept of payment(paypal) and at shipping time.  I oredered it late Sunday night(3 am roughly)...and its sitting here in my hand at 10:30 am wednesday morning!  Great customer service all around !!!!!

All I can say is wow!!  Sitting next to my 5500 the most striking thing is that while its marginally thicker, maybe a 1/4 inch or less, it is significanlty shorter.  Couple that with the fact that when the screen is folded inwards when closed its already like having a case on it. READ \"small footprint\"

The keyboard ROCKS!!!!!!!!!

Cant say much about the screen yet since im just getting it on the charger.

I do love my 5500, but i cannot imagine where this wont be a better performer in most everything.  I was not the biggest fan of the clamshell design, but after reading so many favorable responses, and now that Im sitting here with both side by side....It truly a shame Sharp did not bring these to the US.

Enjoy!  And trust me, the joy isn\'t shortlived!  Awesome piece of hardware!  Hats off to the Sharp Engg. team.  Shame on Sharp\'s software and marketing teams.

My wife used to work at Sharp HQ and met the product innovation team (back in 1997).  She always commented that the team would come up withh fantastic leading edge product ideas, but never seemed to have a congruent global marketing effort.  Also the products, although visionary, tended to short-change the final product (e.g. less memory in the C860, not 128/256K).  Have you EVER seen a billboard, commercial or even a store poster advertising.  Compare it to the advertising of Sony.

Shirtpocket had a full page advert for the C860 in the Febuary (or March) 2004 issue of the UK\'s .Net magazine. I can take a photo of the advert if people want.

Sharp reminds me of the old Xerox.  Has anyone ever read the book \"Fumbling the Future\"?

Went to the Brando site - very tempting.  Did it come translated to English or do you have to install your own ROM to get it in English?  Hope my question is not too obvious - I\'m rather ignorant of what\'s available.

The shipped rom has been modified to mostly be english.  Using the tkcROM or cacko qtopia rom does better.

karmmisht- When I recieved my c860 from Brando is came with the full Japanese rom. No translation service.

there area several ways to update the language localization.  you could install the terminal and then edit the conf file yourslef or there are a couple updater scripts available.  Either way you can have about 80% of the rom in english in les than ten minutes. Then after you mess around with it for a bit....maybe 45 min or so...you start flashing with all the alternative roms   I prefer the cacko QT roms myself.

I knew before hand that id probably NOT be using the sharp ROM, so i decided it was useless to pay extra for language localization that i could do myself if i needed to.  I also was abled to get the new Z in about 3 days with a PDA Air case and extendable usb cable for about $780.00 as opposed to around $840.00 at some other importers.  YMMV

BTW...the standard charger is comes with is fine.  I have tested the voltage from both this charger and the stock sl-5500 charger(EA70) and i have only found a .06V difference between them.

OK - thanks for the info.  I just bought a SL-5600.  After buying all the extras (extreme-limits body suite, extra charger, serialio USB cable, SD card, etc.) the price differential compared to the price you paid for a C860 is not that great.  Maybe I need to try to rationalize owning two PDAs.

I have ordered accessories from Brando and I highly recommend him.

As far as the C860 goes.. I dont think it\'s worth it for me to upgrade from my C700 :? But I wish I could get one..
