Nand Backup -can't Get Free Size

Just tried to do a NAND backup to my Hitachi 4 GB cf microdrive and an error message, "can't get free size" pops up.  It's willing to backup up to my sd card,  but I don't have enough space there - would 1 GB be enough?

Anyway I went to the extent of reformatting the card in Windows XP and checking for errors and nothing shows up.

What does this error MEAN - any ideas?  One person in 2003 posted about the error but no one posted a solution.

I noticed that whenever I put a cf card in of ANY kind, the CF CD line changes to "low" from "high" if THAT means anything.

Help!  I want to backup my present configuration so that I can try out the Cacko ROM.

You need a minimum of about ~140 megs free for a NAND backup.  Realistically this means you need at least a 256 MB card.

I am not sure if I remember correctly but I think it worked for me if I partitioned my microdrive to have a max of 2Gb FAT16 first partition.

Sorry,  I missed your reply!     The backup turned out to be only 135 MB in size - probably because I have just about everything installed to the sd card (which I backup periodically by itself).
I figured out that the backups only work to fat16, and fat16 can only be 2 GB or under in size as sheck.r says.

I wound up using my sd card.  I thought the file would be huge, and so I removed half the stuff on the card before I backed up but it turned out to be relatively small.  Next time I'll use a 256 MB cf card formatted to fat16.

Greetings! I had a similar problem just yesterday, just the difference I was doing NAND restore. Basically this "can't get free size" means = "I can't read (nor write) the card you're giving me!". I couldn't get my 512Mb CF card to react so I used a 256Mb SD card. I would think the Zaurus BIOS (or whatever you call this low-level IO-system interface) is quite primitive and a 4 Gb card sounds like you'd be talking french to an elephant.

I'd try with a smaller card, if you have any (Secure digital included). My problem with NAND required me also to format the SD card into FAT (this meaning FAT16 I assume?). Again, you have to play primitive enough.

(edit: Ok, nice job for me   - I just noticed you already overcame with the problem. Well - maybe I'll leave this post in case somebody else would need this information.)

I just got this error in the backup/restore menu. I'm making a NAND backup.
"can't get free size"
Then I checked my CF card in Windows and it was formatted as FAT32.
I have another CF card formatted as FAT (or FAT16) and this one worked fine.
I'm going to reformat that other CF card to FAT also.
Oh, I remember why I formatted it as FAT32. It was because I was trying to copy 23,000 files (in one directory) to it.
