Drug reference for Zaurus?
« on: February 12, 2004, 10:29:23 pm »
I am a physician who used ePocrates frequently on my Clie N760C, then my Treo 600, and now use it on my iPaq 4350 (boo, hiss).  PPC has powerfully whetted my appetite--for something else!  Ugh.  My #1 reservation about jumping into the mobile Linux scene is the paucity of drug references.

I\'ve seen a couple of references to something called TxDrug, but with little specific info.  Anyone here have experience with this program, or a suggestion for something else?

OK, but I have no Zaurus to run it on, and don\'t plan on getting one at least until I\'m convinced it\'ll run a decent drug refernce program (or until I see a really irresistible bargain!).  I\'ve found no screenshots, user manuals, or even feature listing for TxDrug or anything like it.  I appreciate the D/L link, but I\'d appreciate even more if someone can relate their experiences with this program or one like it...

I installed it. It\'s a very simple database and of no use to a health care worker.

I also use epocrates pro on an iPAQ 4155. I recommend staying with the pocket pc platform for medical applications.

You know what would make a good app?  Take a basic database program, allow the ability to add/update entries, and tag everything you modify.  Have a web site which tracks databases for different subjects (IE: drug references, computer info, how to make mixed drinks, whatever...).  When your Z gets an internet connection, have the program submit your updates to the website, for approval by whoever admins that particular database, and download all new entries so your file is up to date.  With some community assistance, we could come up with some good pocket references in no time.

A couple of notes (in case someone tries to write this).  Any entries made by the user need to be kept in a seperate field, to be displayed alongside the \'official\' existing notes.  These will be retained there until such time as the user\'s comments get added to the official reference. (After all, if someone makes their own notes and they\'re not accepted for public use, that user will of course still want their own notes available).

Yep, I gotta learn how to write code on the Z one of these days...

Actually, and I\'m not saying it\'s a GOOD application, that\'s what Lotus Notes does.

I suppose running ePocrates in a Palm emulator is a possibility.

A palm emulator is not what you want for a medical reference. It uses too many system rersources, runs slowly and is unstable. Not very practical. Just use the iPAQ to run epocrates Rx. The 4350 is the best value for that application.

There is a thread on medical apps for the Z, including running ePocrates in a Palm emulator, here:

I am a registered nurse student and i also have a few problems.

My zaurus is........By far the best pda ever.

One thing holds me back from becoming \"full fledged\" zaurus user and this is Medical refferences.

I do have however from www.beiks.com  some palmOS databases on medical encyclopidia, dictionary, acronyms, which worked with the bdicty(but the older version because i wanted it running on sd) and i dont recommend this for people who dont have time to mess with setting this up because it takes roughly 2 hours of setting up and also having the correct zaurus rom and also having the correct bdicty version.  the new versions do not work off sd and in order to use the palmOS databases on the bdicty for Z you need a certain version which isnt available in the net.  The data base is not as robust as the physician desk refference and also Davy\'s Drug guide.

Since i am starting my nursing program, i found

skyscape website to be the important website for me to gather my medical refferences and to run them on my (not zaurus) but m100 palm handheld with black and grey screen   ugh!!!!!!!

damn i am rambeling and dont know how this is coming out.  im currently at work taking a break
