Pdaxrom For C3000 Beta2
« Reply #105 on: March 07, 2006, 08:12:28 am »
Hi,
Sorry for not giving much support recently but I don't have much time to work on this project right now as I got back to my studies which I have to pay so I need to work on my free time  (I didn't even had time to restore my build system since I lost all my work ... :/ )
btw I still have some of the things I did on another comp and I'll try to make another test release based on this beta2.
For the partitioning concern, the problem is that the partitioning is handled by sfdisk actually, which needs to know precisely the disk parameters. So I don't really know right now how to handle partitions for all the people out there who changed their microdrive with a 1Gb CF card or whatever ... (that's why partitioning is under a different menu and the install will work even if you don't do it or repartition by yourself)
@Danboid : I'd also need someone who knows Python better than me to fix this one, not ime to learn python right now to fix it for next release
SL-C3000 - pdaXrom 1.1.0Beta1
SL-C860 - pdaXrom 1.1.0 RC8 (charging circuitry dead :( )
CF RamStar 512 Mb / Hitachi 4Gb microdrive (thanks to creative's muvo² :p)
SD Sandisk 1Gb / Viking 256 Mb
Linksys WCF13 CF wifi card

Anyone willing to donate for my work, please consider donate to pdaXrom and/or OE/OZ projects instead, I wouldn't have been able to do anything without them ...

Python isn't that hard from what I've seen. I have never touched python before but I was able to fix the usbnetwork.py so that it would allow the internal microdrive to be be selected as a mountable usb disk. I was not able to mount it from my windows laptop, but when I connected it to my other Zaurus, it worked with the C3000 with pdaXrom as the USB client and my other C3100 as the USB hosts, I was able to mount the disk.

And thanks for all your work so far.

I'd forgot about you losing all your data Thc- bad sheey indeed! So you never sent your changes to sashz or anyone else? Why not? I presumed that this is what was going on before and thats how sashz was able to help you get it going. I also thought that most of the problems in porting it to the C3000 would've been solved and that maybe sashz could release betas for us to test, even if he can't test them himself.

I wouldn't worry too much about being able to support all those who have modded their C3000 microdrive- there can't be that many people who have such a setup. Besides, everything is still beta at the moment so we can't expect too much. Lets just get it working well on a standard C3000 first! Unfortunately I don't know python but there has to be a C3000 owner who knows python who'd be willing to help out on this board- there seems to be a lot of pdaxrom using programmers here.

unfortunately, sashz helped me a lot indeed, but mainly in working out the build system to be able to build the whole thing, so I didn't sent him much things while I was working ... btw I have a bakup of the files I had edited in the builder so I hope it won't be too long to have another dev environement up and running again (now need to make some room on my laptop to set it up, as I won't be using a pdax86 image located on an external hard drive anymore ...that's how I did lose everything ... having all my dev environment on a REV cartridge and VMware f***ing everything :/)
BTW, i really hope to have it up and running again very soon so i'd be able to produce a few more betas and send all my work to sashz (I must admit I didn't sent him anything before my crash because, knowing he's very busy with the pdaXrom dev, I wanted to give him something polished which wouldn't need any further work from him)

edit : as of programmers using pdaXrom, 2 of them helped a little bit but one of them don't have a c3000, while the other one finally switched to openBSD after giving me the pivot_root idea.

edit2 : (status update ) i'll try to work my next beta with a 2.6 kernel based bootstrap using kexec to load pdaXrom, which could allow us to have some real multi-boot as being able to load any kernel at boot time  (still have to make some tests though ...)

edit3 : if anyone want to speed up the process to a next beta, please someone try to compile a 1.1.0beta2 kernel for c3000 as I still have everything I need to work on making an image, but won't have time to set up a new dev environment (freeing space etc ...) before my next holidays, while I could work during my little free times in the meanwhile on a new beta image if I had a working 1.1.0beta2 kernel

With a little help from guys from hpc.ru I've managed to reflash c3000 Beta2 onto CF card (mine is 1 Gb TS1GCF45), instead of slow and power-hungry MD. Just copy files to SD card, reflash NAND and kernel, run the console and type:

mke2fs -j /dev/hda1

mount -t ext3 /dev/hda1 /hdd1

cd /

gzip -cd /mnt/card/hdimage.tgz | tar xvf -

reboot

There are some minor bugs (keyboard mapping is a bit weird, CPU config doesn't run etc.), but it works and it's really faster than with MD.

Im having problems getting my usb mouse and keyboard to work with the beta2. Both have worked before under qtopia. The following happens>

if I plug the usbmouse directly to the zaurus, it works fine
if I plug the usbmouse into my 4 port kensington usb 2.0 hub, it does not work at all
the keyboard works both plugged into the hub or directly to the zaurus, but it works better when plugged into the hub. But when it is plugged into the hub i get repeating keys, ie: if I press "K" it will write "KKKKKKKK". thats the only problem when it is plugged into the hub, but if i plug it directly to the zaurus then the keymapping will be completely off, totally random.

Im now using my usb mouse directly to the zaurus and its great to have, it makes it feel so much more like a mini laptop. But its annoying not being able to write on my keyboard.

Is there anyway to reduce the sensitivity of the keys so they dont repeat as much?

(Im running a C3000 with pdaxrom)

thanks!

Thanks for that reply Thc- it was as thorough as i could hope for

Did you say we might get a 2.6 kernel in your next beta release!?! This is BIG NEWS!!! I mustn't get too hyped yet i suppose as it sounds like you're busy and have got a big job ahead of you putting this back together. At least it should be easier second time through eh?

Now we just need those mythical pdaxrom Koffice and k3b packages- has anybody found KDE devel packages fo this new pdaxrom? kword is the only other real good word processor that we could run on the Z, MUCH faster/lighter than Ooo writer. When I install pdaxrom for my dad and give him his new pocket workstation I'd like it to have a viable alternative should he not like Abiword or if Abiword acts up.

Reaper- is that so? What make and model SD card are you using? What is the max speed SD card the C3000 supports? What is the average data transfer to/from SD as compared to the MD?

Has everbody seen that the C3200 has been announced? Very disappointing- just 2GB bigger microdrive

Is there a known issue with USB 2.0 hubs not working with pdaxrom?

Tho my usb keyboard still doesnt work correctly if I plug it directly to the zaurus, does anyone know how to prevent the repeating keys problem?

Actually, I've just replaced MD with CFI flash card, Transcend 1GCF45. I was talking about flashing NAND and unzipping hdimage.tgz off SD/MMC card, not about using SD/MMC as a complete replacement for the MD. I tried to reflash from 2 cards ( Kingston Elite Pro 1 Gb SD and Digitex 1 Gb MMC), both seemed to work more or less correctly in this matter. My regular and preferred one is Kingston, and i'm going to upgrade both SD and CF cards in my Z to larger and quicker ones. Some day, maybe...

BTW, one more strangeness with my "kitchen reflashing": XMMS sometimes loads up CPU to 100% and begins to play approx. 2 times slower. Noticed on some tracks, usually comes off after reboot, but not for long.

It did, however, work perfectly under Qtopia with sharp-rom when plugged into the hub, also under debian...

@Danboid : I don't think 2.6 kernel is mature enough for Cxxxx models (no sound support yet etc ...) I'm only planning to use it as a bootloader so we would be able to load pdaXrom's 2.4.20 kernel (and possibly cacko's one or whatever kernel we want to use with any rom we want to use )
Unfortunately, I'm not able to help in kernel development so we must wait for OE team to finish it (or join them to help them )
Some improvement I may bring to this beta may be an Xorg server by default (if I can get my dev env. ready and compile it well for Cxxxx)
SL-C3000 - pdaXrom 1.1.0Beta1
SL-C860 - pdaXrom 1.1.0 RC8 (charging circuitry dead :( )

I rather prefer it if you do not deviate too much from the mainstream pdaXrom distro. I thought the idea was to be the same as the mainstream pdaXrom so it can be eventually integrated to be part of it?
