Socket and WEP ?
« on: February 14, 2004, 12:41:28 pm »
Has anyone had any luck getting the Socket WL6000 working with WEP ?

I am running a 5600 with the standard pre-emptive kernel v1.2.  It works fine with no WEP, but can\'t connect with WEP enabled.

Mine worked fine for me but I upgraded my SL-5600 to the stock SHARP v1.32 ROM.

Also, I initially had problems with my wireless access point.  Found that the firmware was out-of-date by a couple of versions.  After upgrading it, WEP worked fine.

I can\'t really offer you any advice because I didn\'t do anything special - only that you should have hope that it should work.

Thanks for the advice, but I\'m still not having any luck.

I upgraded the firmware on my access point as you suggested, and tried various settings (64 bit instead of 128 bit; Open vs. shared key. etc.) and still no luck.  I am using a D-Link access point (DWL-2000AP).

The website for the driver says it does not support WEP with the standard Sharp ROM, althoug this could be an old comment.  Any other suggestions?

Make sure your AP is set to \"open system.\" So that you can CONNECT and then use WEP. (In other words, turn off \"shared key authentication\")

Mine works fine this way. I can use WEP for the data, but not for authentication.

Let me know if I\'m just confusing you. It took me a while to get this all straightened out.

Sorry for the delayed response - I have the same experience as clofland.  I had to set the my access point so the \"shared key authentication\" is \"optional\".  (I have an airlink+ access point.  Probably equivalent to your \"Open\" setting.)  So the security is not quite as high as it could be.  Don\'t know if it makes a difference, but the \"key\" on both the access point and 5600 were set in \"ASCII\" format (not hex).   In the case of my access point, a 13-digit key is interpreted as 128 bit encryption.

I have symbol card and it works fine, too. I think once AP and card has the same
authentication type, they may work.(but I\'m not that sure and I\'m just using \"Open system\".)
I used HEX type WEP.(I had to enter many characters).
BTW, is there anyone had luck with kismet? I gave up after a couple of tries....

I\'ve got Symbol & SMC Prism 2 cards. I\'ve never been able to get Symbol to work with Kismet, so I use Symbol with Wellenreiter and SMC with Kismet.

It\'s very interesting. Can you tell me which rom & kernel you  use?
I assume that you are talking about sl-5600.

Guest, see my signature. I\'m using a kernel that has wireless extensions enabled, it can be found on the ZUG download page. I use both the Cacko Qtopia & tKc ROMS primarily (the lask of PIMs keeps me from X11.

This has probably been posted before, but it is related to the question of using kismet with the Socket wlan CF (but not the original post on WEP):
