The hardware is virtually identical so I'll take either a 760 or 760 . i don't see why i benefit from having a c-1000 really? and i don't think 25,000-35,000 yen would buy a c-3000 even locally in japan. - . and i need more than a stock Sharp rom gives me.
as far as rom options go :: it seems like pdaXrom would give the most usable mobile platform. The option of windowmanagers and ported applications seem to be the most like a decent linux box : without giving up the most basic of PDA functionality.
but is it stable? do installs always work? I'll have to check in that forum, but what would you suggest for a ROM to run smoothly with activ development?

I don't know yen, but I recently paid $610 US, plus shipping, for a 3100 (from Japan). The hard drive makes it a real portable computer in ways that a laptop couldn't be. I have all my papers, all my pictures, and all my spreadsheets on the thing, and it fits in my pocket. Plus I can really type on the thing.
I migrated to this from a 5500, and the differences are large. Especially the keyboard. Such a joy in comparison.
I use pdaXrom -- on the 5500 I used OZ/GPE, but this screen has enough resolution to use X more fully, and pdaXrom does that. It also gives me full versions of:
firefox, thunderbird (though I don't use that), sylpheed-2.0, LaTeX (and LyX), nedit, inkscape, gnumeric, abiword, xpdf
I think open-office has been ported, but I'd rather not bother with that.
The biggest limitation is the PIM software. I use fltdj, which is simple-minded but works reliably. I had trouble with gpe-calendar on the 5500 -- dates and times of appointments would migrate. fltdj is pretty stable. There is also the kde PIM stuff, which is more elaborate but which is a strain on the machine.
Even with the 400mHz xscale cpu and 64 megs of RAM, you do want to use lightweight apps when you can -- what, firefox? Well, dillo and other minimal browsers won't let me on to my banking website, Without that I am flying blind when on a trip. My e-mail server is secure IMAP so sylpheed or something else full-bodied is needed.
