Ipk Files Not Appearing In Install Package List
« on: March 20, 2006, 10:41:53 pm »
I have a c760 with the original Sharp ROM and would like to install aBookReader and Sudoku (from Figlabs). I downloaded both ipk and can see them with the file explorer. When I launch Add/Remove Software, I cant see the files in the Install Package list.

Any suggestions?

Ipk Files Not Appearing In Install Package List

Yeah, I'm having the same problem with my C1000 running Cacko 1.23. I put a package called zelement_1.0.0_arm.ipk on my sd card and ran the add/remove software app, it didn't show up on the list. Then I noticed there was a directory called "Install Files" under the internal flash, so I tried throwing the package in there but the add/remove still didn't list it. Is there a particular place the package has to be for that app to find it?

Then, doing a search through this forum, I found someone commenting that the gui add/remove didn't work very well. Is that still true with Cacko?

Anyway I then tried using ipkg from the command line (after doing an "su") and it complained about the package not being in gzip format. So it looks like there are multiple package formats floating around. It would be nice to know which I can install, if there is a way to know that, before loading it and trying it.

I have looked here and there on the internet about how to install packages and have not been able to figure it out. If anyone can help me get my first package installed on this zaurus I would certainly appreciate it. Not very useful if I'm stuck with just the stock Cacko packages!

you can always unpack it and install it manually, not a huge ordeal...

Well, it's not this particular package I care about; I just grabbed something to make sure I understand how to install packages. I have visions of loading Meanie's X/Qt cramfs package and Debian and openoffice. But I don't want something that major to be the very first thing I install. I prefer taking baby steps first.

Should I just try another package? Is there one simple application floating around somewhere that is known good to install on a C1000 with Cacko 1.23? Maybe a text editor (I'm not a huge fan of vi even though I've used it a lot)? A pointer to a known good one would be appreciated.

PaulBx1,
look at these 2 posts about files being "changed" when downloaded in Firefox on a windows machine:
https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...ndpost&p=119181
https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...ndpost&p=119182

Sometimes a browser like Firefox, or IE will add the wrong extension to a *.IPK file
When this happens, just rename the file to it's original "filename.ipk"
And sometimes a browser will try to unpack a *.IPK archive when it is downloaded.
In windows, I use Flashget to download the file when Firefox gives me problems.
hope this helps,
Jon

flashget (and flashgot, the Firefox add-on) did the trick, thanks! The file was 42k instead of 50 k.

I tried installing it with the gui installer, which said ipkg complained about something. I then went and did it on the command line, which completed the install without complaining. However now I have no idea where the thing ended up, or how to invoke it!    I was on the SD card at the time, and just did "ipkg install zelement..."

It doesn't appear available from the gui. I tried to do a "find" from the command line but forgot the syntax and there are no man pages either <sigh>

A lot of times when the GUI installer complains about installing a package,
you're probably missing 1 or more dependencies.
What I do when I find a new program to install, I use google with the package filename.
This helps find refrences to the file. Most of the time, if a file is on a Feed, there will be
a file in the feed called "Packages"
Download the packages file and read it in a text editor such as notepad.
It will list all the packages with their dependencies.
Now you can search for these dependencies and download them also.
I always install the dependencies files first, then the program that needs them.
BTW, when you open the "Packages" file in notepad on windows, it will be formatted in
an unreadable format. I just copy the whole thing to Wordpad, then copy it back.
This formats it into a readable format that notepad in windows can read.

As far as it not running in the GUI, there is a method to enable it to run, but you cannot uninstall it within the GUI.
There is also a method to uninstall it from the commandline, but I'm not sure how to do that.
It would be best to uninstall it using the commandline, then find the dependencies, then
reinstall it with it's dependencies in the GUI. Now it will be available in the GUI's uninstaller.

I figured out where it was as I found a man page on the internet for "find". It was in /home/QtPalmtop/bin and /home/QtPalmtop/share; it worked when I ran it from either.

I also found this page which explains a lot even if it is about iPKG rather than ipkg (an ipkg replacement, maybe?)

I tried "ipkg remove zelement_1.0.0_arm(1).ipk" which did nothing as far as I can tell. I suspect the uninstall is not part of the control package (if that is where it is supposed to be). Anyway the program is so simple it may simply be uninstalled by deleting those two files. My guess anyway.

I also tried "ipkg files zelement..." which also did nothing. Strange. Also the package name apparently had illegal characters, "(" and ")". The whole name was zelement_1.0.0_arm(1).ipk, maybe I picked up that stuff on the download or something? Another thing to watch out for. Oh, well, I guess I get the drift of how this works, part of it, anyway. Talk about a nit-picky installation process!

<later> Yes, I found that flashget did that rename, so I turned that option off. Flashget is about 10 times as complicated as I need, but at least the files get across unmolested, if not the name!

If you're going to uninstall the app, rather than the .ipk, you should tell the uninstaller exactly that ... i.e.
Code: [Select]
ipkg remove zelementor something of that sort, ne? Or perhaps it's called zelement_1.0.0 ... whatever, that's what you want to uninstall, not the .ipk? It's easy enough to get rid of the .ipk by navigating to it with your filemanager and deleting it.

Yes, that did it, from both places. Thanks for the help, I should have guessed!

I'm glad people don't mind answering these basic questions. My searches haven't helped as much as I'd hoped. The info is probably out there, but digging it out is the problem.

Now I guess I'll try tacking X/Qt...
