ok, this is odd, I just rebooted and it's going on about me running the wrong kernel. 2.4.20 instead of 2.6.16-3.5.4.1-rc4

It's odd cause I downloaded the zImage file from the link earlier in the post.

For some reason you are still running the Trisoft 2.4 kernel.
Please make sure the naming of zImage.bin is correct when you try to flash it.

Any idea why abiword is purple in places, it looks a bit odd.

When are you meant to do this? There isn't a point during the flashing where you're left with a prompt and when you're in GPE it's access denied and would probably overwrite some GPE things.

Funny

opening gpdf from the terminal and then opening a pdf, it runs.

opening qpdf from the icon and then opening a pdf, it quits unexpectedly.

OK, this a big error.

I had my Z unplugged from the mains. I had logged out (I was aiming for suspend in the menu and missed) and then suspended it using the button.

It main the usual beep and went into suspend. I closed the clamshell and went to bed.

Next day, I turn it on. Log it in. It asks me for my timezone, welcomes me to GPE and everything is reset back to the defaults. Weird or what.

Interesting indeed. Never had that happen here. Did you mess w/ ~/.gpe and / or ~/.matchbox before logging out?

Just a small status update:

Since 3.5.4.1-final is going to be released in a few days, I'll wait for it before releasing Hentges T1.
That makes feed-handling  bit easier.

Also someone asked for Spitz images. Since Spitz is pretty much identical to Akita, I'll compile the image for testing. I don't expect any problems since Akita is already working very well.

used the standard terminal icon, not the run as root one, so I guess not. How would I tell?

I have no idea how to check if opening pdf from the icon runs it as root or not.

Sorry being dense, but still new to this.

Is there a big giant manual for GPE somewhere?
