I dunno why this is, but I reformatted with my digicam and it works again. I dont know if I would've gotten the same effect if I reformatted with laptop or the Z.. I know it's ideal to reformat with the Z to use with the Z, but I really want to be able to use this same card for my digicam too.

Be carefull with which sd cards you use.  SD cards are unstable wo the z but a few.  I remember back when the sl-5500 was having a heart attack over a sandisk 125mb.  Then i purchased a 1gb PNY and has not given me any problems at all.  SD cards are hard to come by when it comes to stability.

I recommend you stick with a 2gb PNY or Patriot.  My 4b Patriot was working fine till it died after 2 weeks of usage....just some examples.

What about Sandisk? I have a Sandisk Ultra II 2GB SD, and it does not work no matter what I try.

if it doesnt work, it doesnt work.  Take it back or get another card.  They run cheap now a days.

Some suggest adding a 7mb partition infront of the vfat.  Not sure how this works since the zaurus cannot see it to begin with.

I also have the Sandisk Ultra II - 2GB SD card, and It works in my C3100
I never reformatted it, it worked "out of the box".
I haven't used it much yet and only have 132mb of files on it as of now.

SD cards are getting pretty cheap now.  I just formatted my 4Gb in my Z and just left it there.  When I need to access it I use the Z as a card reader.  I formatted it with ext2 and changed some of the config options for umount (courtesy of Meanie's site).

OMG! I finally got this card to work! I tried to pop the Sandisk SD into my Wife's Pentax camera, and it would not read, so I formated it in my Kodak camera, and the C3100 read it. Seems to work so far, and I transferred all the files from my 1GB CF and did a backup to the SD.

I don't know if this will help, but here is my results from Sandisk Ultra II 2GB Sd card.
It came pre-formatted, and I haven't formatted it.

well something usefull came out of this one.  you just saved me another 40-70 bucks.  I poped my deceased  sd card into my dv 4500 and formated it.  Now it works on my pc, zaurus and also my hybrid camera.

In my zaurus, i had access through it from terminal but I knew nothing of the cylinder size to fix it.    I somehow got into something more than the sd card's partition and wiped it out.  Something like a hidden partition "so to speak of."  So I kept the card thinking someone can come up with a solution and i remembered this post.

I just did the patch onto my c3100 running cacko-1.23, and it worked without drama. Before the patch, a 4GB card made it panic.

I had to reformat the card because the Z claimed it was full of junk files with weird names... then it was fine. I think it was because the 150x 4GB sd card had just previously tried in a device which definitely didn't like big cards (a Pure PocketDAB 2000 mp3/dab radio, which only accepts 2GB cards max according to documentation), and I think that corrupted the card slightly as the Z said it was full of bogus files even though the card looked fine in Windows. Once reformatted FAT32 it was fine on Z and windows.

Still hoping for an SDIO driver :-/

BTW, on the subject of partitioning flash cards. A little while ago I was backing up my stock-rom C3100 and made a flash backup which I didn't copy off, as I noticed that there was also a microdrive backup option in the D+M menu, so I tried it thnking it'd create a tar.gz archive, but instead it did a raw block copy off the microdrive onto the 512MB cf card, which failed as the CF card wasn't big enough. The CF card's partition info was then corrupted, I reformatted in windows, but it didn't work in Zaurus, and couldn't be used in D+M menu to backup.

Basically, without partition info on the flash, windows formatted the entire device as FAT, leaving no partition info. I could mount it at the command line with "mount /dev/sda /mnt/flash". It took a few goes to create a partition on it with fdisk /dev/sda using a usb flash memory reader on linux, but afterwards the card worked normally again and I was once again able to do NAND backups.

I suspect the same problem exists with SD cards too.

Sounds like the CF driver in the backup code doesn't check the size of the device and just writes off the end of it - the drive then ignores the top bit of the address and wraps around to the beginning, right where the partition table is.

It's not likely to happen on an SD card, as those are serially addressed.

good theory but the backup code did throw an error in red letters saying the destination was full.

I am wondering if the function is intended to make a raw copy of the internal drive onto an external one, rather than make a backup file... but then I'd have expected the CF card to look like a corrupted multi-partition microdrive than a unformatted/unpartitioned corrupted mess?
