Zaurus And Heat Issues
« on: April 11, 2006, 09:00:45 pm »
Hi
I'm considering getting a Zaurus and I just wanted to ask how warm it gets when its running. Normally when I think of subnotebooks I think of heat, and I just wanted to know if this is an issue with any of the Zaurus models. Additionally, how noisy is it, particually the microdrive. Can you hear it spinning? Lastly, how does the Zaurus smell? This may sound like a funny question, but I've heard bad stories about Apple ibooks that smell terrible.

There is a bit of heat at the bottom of the Zaurus after long CPU intensive use, but it is only a slight raise in temperature which is almost unnoticable compared to other units which get hot as hell (did I say the OQO? now that things is too bloody hot to hold literally). As far as smell goes, there is none. Depending on where you get it shipped from, there may be some smell from the packaging which wears off after a few days

The Zaurus is not a subnotebook, but rather a PDA, so it really doesn't get warm at all. The only time I've ever noticed any heat is when it is charging, and even then it's just a bit.

It is basically entirely silent. You can probably hear the microdrive if you put your ear directly against the Zaurus, but it's not something that would ever bother anyone.

Well, I can say from experience that any stories you may have heard about iBooks smelling bad are isolated incidents. Apparently the keyboards in some older models had a problem, either with the glue deteriorating or it picking up scents from the user, but it's not like it's that common of a problem. As for the Zaurus, it has no smell aside from the usual electronics smell.

Actually I have heard of some instances of the screens making a buzzing sound but I can't recall the exact circumstances... certainly hasn't happened with any of my configurations.

Things that are guaranteed to make your Zaurus run hot...

1. Running whilst charging.
2. Running with a WIFI card in (this can produce a lot of heat).
3. Overclocking.

Try not to combine all 3 for long periods of time

My 3100 rarely gets warm at all.  I can easily hear the microdrive spin up, but I have above-average hearing.  I think I have heard a high-pitched buzz from the screen before, but I could be wrong (unlike my Tungsten T3 which constantly sings to me)

My C1000 runs very cool and very quiet (no microdrive).   I hadn't really thought much about heat, but yeah, it's nothing like a laptop which usually blows heat out of a small fan and can get very warm.   That's the advantage of the Arm/Xscale archetecture, I guess.

Where do I get the beer-scented ones?

I could be resting on a bar or.. and here's a real story, in your pocket in a situation like this..

I was in a club, many years ago on a friends 30th Birthday party. It was the kind of club where charming young ladies come up to you and dance for you. Very nice..

If you are wearing a jacket they like you to keep your hands in your pockets so whilst a girl was dancing for me I obliged and had my hands in my jacket pocket (this was a Dryzabone outdoor jacket).. I was so caught up in the action that I didn't actually notice until the end of the dance when I got up that some swine had filled my pockets with beer

What do you mean swine!? Someone had just donated a couple of pints and thanks to your jacket they didn't leak away

What?   Eh?  My hearing may not be as good as the dog's, but I can't hear my hard drive spin up at all.  It gets a bit warm when using with the charger plugged in _and_ with wifi running, but not overly so.  Definitely warm, not hot.

No smell, at least none that even my wife can detect, and she made me take back a keyboard once because it smelled too much.
