Which Rom Is The Best For Me ?

Hi everyone,

First i have to thank all people who hold the Zaurus alive in other country than Japan.
You're the best guys!

Well, i'm quite lost with the rom : i have to make a choice, but i can't test all the rom because it take me a lot of time and also my pda won't help in my job along this time.

I have tested cacko, i think it's a good rom for PIM. But i want to developp (if it possible ...  ) on the Zaurus and have more applications.

So i test pdaXrom, that's quit good but i have a problem with power drain. See my post in the appropriate section. And on pdaXrom pim applications won't work ...

So now i'm lost ...

I just want :
- PIM
- developpment (if possible)
- a unix/linux like environment (X11 if possible)

thanks for your help!!

ps : i have a SL-C1000
ps : the Zaurus have a ati chipset for video?

If you want to do development, in X, then I think pdaXrom is what you need.  I don't know about your battery problems.  My battery life is great on my (relatively new) 3100 with pdaXrom.  They have all the development kit you need.  

There _are_ PIM apps.  You can get gpe apps, but IMO they are somewhat bloated.  Speaking of which, you can get KDE pim aps, too.  

Personally, I have found that fltdj does most of what I need in terms of PIM.  It has a calendar, which is low on features, but reliable (GPE calendar would sometimes change dates on me when I used it on my old 5500).  Do back up the data regularly, since if the machine crashes while fltdj is open, files can get trashed.  It also has a "journal" section, and contacts.  Works, and is small.

Have you tried X/Qt on Cacko?  Also I think you can add development tools.  I personally use the cross-compiler kit on my PC, since it's way faster and has all the storage it needs

you actually have a few choices

for Qtopia based:

  Sharp ROM/Cacko (old but stable version of Qtopia)
  OZ/Opie (newer opensource version forked off Qtopia)

for X based:

  pdaXrom
  OZ/GPE

if you want both Qtopia and X:

  run one of the Qtopia based one and add X/Qt which will allow you to run X based apps while running Qtopia at the same time
  dual boot between X and Qtopia (OZ allows you to switch between OPIE and GPE without rebooting but you have to manually configure that)

all above options have native gcc compilers, perl, python, etc.. so you can actually develop on the Zaurus if that's what you want to do.
java is a bit different though. currently pdaXrom has the most recent java clone (jamvm 1.4.2) package.

The KDEPIM/PI suite is by far the best you can get. There are native packages for Sharo / Cacko ROM, and I have found packages of the latest version 2.2.7 fpor pdaXrom too.
I was very surprised to see that on pdaXrom the GUI of these applications reacts even faster and look nicer than under QTopia (Sharp / Cacko).

So the PIM aspect should be satisfied under pdaXrom very well (except maybe for alarms - I was not able to get KDEPIM/PI alarms to work properly under pdaXrom).

Development:
I have installed the devel-img by Silvio Iaccarino on an SD card and use it with Cacko ROM. So also that's possible.
However, I only use it for small, simple C programs. I'm not sure if development for QTopia is possible with that kit.

so i would try OZ/GPE but i have a problem to flash : from this url what files must i place into my sd-card ?
And must i rename it?

I have another question, where can i get ko/pi ? from this website http://www.pi-sync.net/ ?

If you are doing gpe, I don't think you will find the X11 version at pi-sync or the sourceforge site.  They are for the sharp/cako roms.  More than likely it would have to be an OZ feed or contrib.

I have flash my Zaurus with OZ/GPE !

first impression : it's ugly ! BUT it's very fast and similar to a linux environment !

i think this rom is poor in applications, so what feed must i take?

there is no pim fort this rom?

the battery problem seems to be also with this rom. I use the Z 20 minutes and the battery came at 80%. It was 100% before ...

i'm starting to think my battery is dead ...

The feeds are pre-installed and reside on the oz.org server (or a mirror thereof). Run 'ipkg update' to download the lists.

Yes, there are gpe PIM apps - gpe calendar, gpe contact, etc. - try using 'ipkg list *calendar*' etc.

Depending on the machine, OZ comes with kernel 2.6 incorporating a much more fine grained battery monitoring algorithm.

Chances are the SharpROM just uses three values, so OZ is simply _much_ more accurate.

The 2.6 kernel battery voltage-percentage lookup table is more realistic about what 100% actually is. The Sharp version lets the voltage drop considerably before moving off the 100% mark - this means that the machine appears to have 100% for longer, and that it also drops more quickly once it's not at 100% anymore.

the stock kernel with the stock sharp rom is pretty buggy but with tetsu kernel installed which has all the kernel patches applied, the battery level is pretty accurate and not the 3 level anymore.

lol i'm still not sure whats this tetsu kernel. but the battery measuring in cacko 1.23 is pretty bad, i mean some moron thought to specify 50% as 3.6 volts..... of course i can still calculate the real % from that but it would be nicer if it would show the correct % by default.  
so you say the tetsu one doesnt do this?
