Pc Connect Fried My Usb Port?
« on: May 13, 2006, 09:26:48 pm »
Hey,

I tried to Connect my C-1000 to my computer for the first time, to mount the SD card.  My computer is a 12 inch powerbook.  When I hit okay in PC connect utility on the Zaurus, about 8 windows popped up on the computer saying it didn't recognize the format of the SD card.  So I used the Mac OS X disk utility and I formatted the SD card to "Unix File System."  After it formatted, I tried copying over a folder of MP3's and a 180 mb .avi file.  Either during or after the transfer (I'm not sure), the Zaurus put itself in "off" mode, I guess because I hadn't touched it while waiting for the files to transfer (very obnoxious).

My computer reported a "device removal" error.  After that, I tried to get the zaurus to connect a few more times to no avail.  Then, I tried putting in my CF card reader to transfer the files that way.  But the card reader wouldn't work.  Neither  would my USB  mouse on that port.  It appears to be dead.  Has this happened to anyone else?  I'll need to send my computer in for repair (luckily I have AppleCare).

How should I do things differently in the future?  This really sucks, that I can't get to my SD card directly, that my USB port is fried, and that the Zaurus shuts off in the middle of a file transfer.

Thanks,

Louis

It doesn't sound like the USB port fried. Does it smell like it's burned?
Try rebooting your Zaurus, maybe that'll fix it.
In cacko, I'm not sure about Sharp ROMs, there is a battery applet.
(It's called "Light & Power" in cacko)
If your Zaurus is plugged in to external power, you can select suspend up to 12 hours.
That should be long enough for most file transfers.
You can also change the suspend setting for battery usage.

It's my powerbook's port that is the problem.  I don't have a way to test the Zaurus port.  I could try restarting this computer though...  I don't think that will help since the port isn't even putting out any power I don't think.  I'll report back on trying a restart.

Okay!

On the Zaurus I formatted the SD card with

mkfs.msdos /dev/mmcda1

Now the port on my computer is fine again, but the Zaurus mounts 46 different drives when I plug it into the computer.  Any help?

46? That's a lot. My XandrOS 3.02 OCE Linux box reports the SD and CF cards as 8 each when I hook the 860 up in USB Storage mode.

Search the forums.  I think I have read about the many drives detected problem before.  I have never had it myself though.

I also hate the Zaurus still powering off when connected to usb problem.  It drives me crazy and I'm surprized it doesn't botherother people in these forums.  Though, it mught be a cacko problem.  Are you on Cacko?
