You call this Linux?

Don\'t get upset over the controversial topic and my stupid opinion.
So I got one of those SL-5500s, and I guess I should have done my homework, but I was a bit dissapointed. I did most of my research on Linux for the Ipaq, and my plan was to get me one of those, until my mind changed.
Anyway, the Ipaq Linux guys have more of a real Linux implementation. They have Debian, etc. These OPIE/QT roms aren\'t good for me, since I don\'t use my PDA as a PDA (PIM) device at all...so I guess it\'s me.
Away from the talk...has anyone gotten Familiar,  or their own distribution from the ground up on a Z? At least I\'m given ssh...

There are plenty of additional roms available, check the downloads on this forum, etc.  You\'ve got openzaurus, tkcrom, cacko, and a bunch of others.  Many of them are based off the sharp rom, but some (such as openzaurus) are done from scratch.
If you want a debian environment, then check http://www.pocketworkstation.org, which is a debian environment you can run chrooted from a memory card.  You can also load up x11 (either directly, or via xvnc), perl, even a full development envrionment.  Just check the feeds.

Thank you.
It looks like the pocketworkstation Debian approach is what I want. I\'ll give it a try tomorrow. I tried OZ and 3.13 Sharp by the way...OZ is definately an improvement, but not what I want.
I was thinking about doing what the pocketworkstation.org guy did...only a chroot environment of FreeBSD.

So what is it you need this thing to do or have? All I see is that you want SSH and for some reason you don\'t like or know Qt/Qtopia.  You do know that you can add SSH don\'t you? There are many other tools and apps you can install and since you don\'t use the PIM apps( no sync\'ing ) why does the 3.x ROMs work for you?

I do have ssh, I mean It\'s A Good Thing by that, sshing to my desktops was my best option for what I wanted (and perhaps still is).
The question on what I do with it...mainly development for the desktop when away, etc, which is why a dekstop-like approach is useful for me...

there is a gentoo port for the sharp, don\'t have the link handy and have not tried it either, but I do run gentoo on my laptop and it only took me about a week to get it configured correctly......not for those who get impatient easily.  It wasn\'t an experience thing either, have run linux since my first windows 9x computer crashed the day I bought it in 1995.

For anyone woh has tried Pocket Workstation, is it worth the try -- ie .... would the usefulness of my Zaurus improve using that over the Sharp ROM?

no, not really.

it was neat, for the time, but I think pdaxrom will surpass it... althought apt-get was nice.  very nice.

Or if you don\'t have a CXXX machine then Xqt looks pretty good. The big problem with Pocket Workstation was that you had to quit Qtopia to run it (due to problems with virtual terminals and the vnc client). This is a pain which Xqt circumvents, that said there\'s no doubt far more software available for Pocket Workstation via apt-get. It depends what you want.

Actually, if you install XQt server, you can run pocketworkstation in X11 inside Qtopia, so no need to quit qtopia and reboot...

How does the pivot root system like this?

Does it work with root pivotted inside but not outside?
