Opie for dopeys

Weird stuff--I am apparently unable to understand how the Opie UI can be \"applied\" to the basic Sharp ROM.  I think I might even be misunderstanding the \"heirarchy\" of terminology with this.  I get the idea from previous reading that ROM=ROOT SYSTEM+KERNEL. I am familiar with the idea of flashing as with firmware in CD drives, etc.

As far as I\'ve been able to understand it, the way to apply the Opie thing is simply through the .ipk files available on their site, installing them through the normal add/remove function in Settings.  Is that right?  If so, is there a particular place from which the .ipk packages must be installed.  I think I may have noticed it must be in the root of whatever drive they\'re on.  But having \"apparently\" installed a few components found in the Opie for Sharp ROM feed, I can\'t see any difference in the unit\'s operation.

Am I just missing some absurdly simple step, or what is the deal?  Thanks friends.

It can\'t be easily \"applied\" to the basic Sharp ROM. If yuo want to use Opie then you are better off installing OZ.

If you only want to use a few components of Opie then you can install then from the sharprom feed, however be warned that some of the applets and inputmethods will crash Qtopia and cause it to enter an endless reboot cycle. Actually your zaurus isn\'t rebooting only the GUI is rebooting, so if you have ssh somesuch installed you can connect to the Z and remove the problem applets.

Also note that not all of the apps in the Sharp rom feed have been tested on the Sharp ROM.

I remember a post from the old zaurus devnet forum, where someone compiled qtopia 1.6.2 for the Sharp rom, and worked out some instructions for applying it.  The one thing standing in the way of doing the same with the opie base off of openzaurus is all the oz components are linked against a slightly newer version of /lib/ld-linux.so, and since /lib on the sharp rom is read-only, there is no hope of copying the newer rev over to it without reflashing the base rom.
Qtopia 1.6 gives you on-the-fly rotation, if that\'s the main thing your looking for.  Check out the instructions at http://www.apex.net.au/~twalker/qtpalmtop

I had the same problems with the Opie 1.0 feed for the Sharp 3.10 ROM.
There is a new feed for Opie 1.03 - I\'ve installed a lot, and the only one that caused any problems was the clipboard applet - made it reboot every 20 seconds. Here\'s the address:
http://opie.handhelds.org/feed/sharprom/1.0.3/
You need Opie pics and inline-pics to \"see\" some changes. I think libopie is a must for many as well.
