5600 Hardware questions
« on: February 26, 2004, 05:12:35 pm »
Just order my 5600, camera and sandisk memory/wifi card and it should be here tomorrow.

Am I going to have problems with the wiFi card?  Also, will the SDIO cards work with the 5600, I would like to a wiFi card there and use the CF for other items (i.e. Camera, memory).

Also, I would like to connect my GPS via a serial cable to the Zaurus, is this possible?

Thanks in advance for bring me up to speed on my new gadget.

AFAIK, the SD slot of the 5600 has _no_ IO feature!
I\'ve once heard of a CF Card that supplies a serial port, bit I\'m not sure where I heard that

Not now,  and probably not ever,  due to the SD Card ASSociation\'s \"security through obscuity\" policy.

Yup:  I just bought one from Scott at fivestarassoc.com,  and it works well with my Sportrak (I\'d say \"great\",  but it\'s a bit of a hassle to have about 8 feet of cable.  You might want to get the smaller \"adapter\" he sells for a few dollars more,  or ask him if he\'ll make you a shorter cable).  You may need to tweak the serial port settings on the 5600:  some ROMs start a getty or a PPP daemon on the serial port by default,  and you need to reboot to get the Z to come up with the serial port free for use by the GPS (there are how-tos on the web for this).

I\'m working on a mounting arrangement to put the Z and the GPS in the truck now,  and will report back in a week or so about how well it works with zRoadmap on my trip.
