Shortly after Windows 2000 was launched Microsoft announced that next versions of Windows and Office were going after that loverly product (de)activation.  At that point I picked full version copies of Windows 2000 (pro and advanced server) and Offfice 2000 Premium so, that I could have breathing room during this era. I just knew that Microsoft would try to pull this.  I think the Home version users are in for the worst of it.

In 2002 I switched over to MacOS X as my primary platform in part to avoid this and now I am exploring Linux thanks to my little Z.
I think I'm coming down with what kahm's got!  I now have 3 Zaurii in house!  ;)

I have had both Linux and Windows machines next to each other on my desk for approaching 10 years. I never made a concious decision to change or quit using one or the other but I now find that the XP machine rarely gets turned on, I do most of what I need with Linux.

The XP machine is now used only for small aps that I can't be bothered to figure out under Linux eg programming satellite cards and messing with my PSP.

Is Windows quitting on you, or are you quitting on Windows?  Windows
attached to the internet?  Whew...  And after all the work I did to
help fix DCOM for 2000 SP2 (the price was right), and another user is
about to move on...

The opinions above are not in any way reflective of laser light.

For me, I'll still use Windows 'cos I develop and maintain a few applications that currently can only be developed on Windows.

On Windows itself, I can write windows apps, PocketPC apps, Palm apps (using cgywin and PilRC tools)and HandheldPC apps. With a live-cd or emupc (or whatever its called) I could write apps for Cacko as well. With cygwin, I could potentially write for linux apps too.

If there is some native way of compiling apps for the above target platforms, I would consider switching, though right now, I am considering dual-booting. Tried that in the past, but never quite made the switch.

Bear in mind that I am not averse to *nix, its just that my responsibility for these apps that spans multi-platform requires me to be able to develop and maintain, and currently Windows allows me to do so, whereas linux is still a variable in terms of development for other platforms.

Let me first get my recovery DVD made and I'll try dual-booting ...

EDIT: oh and, beyond development, I do see that linux can already fulfill my other pc usage of ...

1. Notes taking - Treeliner ... Outliner
2. Web development and browsing -- FireFox, any plain text editor
3. Simple Office usage -- Abiword, gnumeric or OpenOffice
4. Simple Graphics stuffs -- GIMP
5. Multimedia -- mplayer etc

I'm pretty impressed that almost every other linux distro I've tried in the past 1~2 years came with filled to the brim with rather complete and polished apps that fulfill 80% (or more) of average users' needs.

My development needs happen to fall into the 20% zone unfortunately. And no, I really hasten to use wine or anything of that sort ... although I use cgywin in Windows!

I only have windows for games and editing video.  I have more than a few linux/unix boxes and now a mac mini (core solo).  I don't think the mini will cut it (pardon the pun) for video editting and the linux tools are not up to par (though they are getting better).

If this is truly happening, I would sooner buy a ps3 for gaming and a mac mini core dual with a gig of ram for video editting (final cut pro).  os x still costs the same amount of money, but for now I like their product more than windows.  I can turn it into a server and add tons of open source stuff without any extra cost.
I'm now an iphone user and use my zaurii as serial terminals, perl and shell scripting and when I need 640x480 screens

I rarely use windows any more.  As of now the ONLY reason I boot into windows is to transfer stuff to my phone or play Halflife2.  I do everything else in Linux.  I mean, why use windows when you can use Linux and have it look like THIS!

I do have a legitimate copy of windows (got it free from school) but couldn't care less if it gets "deactivated".  Is there a way around the WGA thingy?

My main concern isn't so much ditching windows all together.  I'm slowly making the process right now with my Z and VMWare, but I could just imagine all my friends and family calling me up because I'm their "techi guru."  That's gonna suck.....
C1000 w/...  Cacko Lite (When I use the Z alot for business)... pdaXrom (when I see something cool and want to try it.  Best way for me to learn shell commands)

Xgl under what every distro he is using... Do a search for XGL...

most primarly us it under Suse or Fedora...

I would use it but I heard of problems running games while XGL is enabled....

Exactly!  And there's more to it.  You can opaque windows, they jiggle when you move them, and simple things such as the alt-tab command are beautifully animated.

All thanks to Novell and their development of Xgl.  It's still beta software, but pretty dang stable.

True, but that is easily worked around by creating a simple script to launch another normal X session with your game.  I do it with all my games in linux and don't even notice any slow downs.  And it has the added benefit of being able to switch back to the Xgl one in the middle of the game to do normal stuff.

I use it under gentoo.

Reason 1: i do alot multimedia stuffs on windows, Gimp is good, but it's not photoshop, plus, as multimedia editing goes, Gimp is about as far as Linux gets.

Raeson 2: i also do alot gaming on linux, halflife 2, counter strike source, etc...

duel to those two main reason, i m stuck with windows....*sigh*...

50% of my computer usage is taken by those 2 reasons mentioned above, 30% web browsing (including blogging, etc etc...) 20% other random stuffs (watch video, listen to mp3, etc etc...)

linux can only fufill 50% of my needs, while windows gives me 100%, I love linux, and i have couple linux set up as my 3D randering farm, and a laptop with kubunto, but as for daliy usage, a windows box fits my needs better.( still hate windows tho....)

Mac OSX is nice....but not too sure about the hardware....I have mac osx x86 running on another laptop just for fun....but it's slooooooww... ><

it isn't as bad as all that. granted I use win2k for a few games, but wine & cedega can do pretty well too.  Cinelerra, Kino (not the zaurus app), and avi demux can do  nice video and there is also some commercial software available.....
