Which Distro Do You Use?
« on: August 15, 2006, 04:11:51 pm »
Greetings to all,

I'm curious as to what forum members are using on their Zaurii, as what I have heard so far there appears to be a big following for all different options.

If you dualboot just choose the most common distro you use

You could also mention any reasons for this preference if you wish.

(apologies if this poll has been done before - I did search and found not one)

I started out using the tkcRom on my 5500 then migrated to Cacko which I have stayed with on the C760 and now C1K.  I have the pdaXQTrom also installed mainly for Gnumeric and AbiWord.

I've been keeping my eye on OZ, especially Angstrom.  I may just switch when that matures a bit more.

Yeah me too. My C3100 uses Sharp distro cause everything works there! For my C3000 I am working on getting a multi boot working so I can boot multiple systems like Cacko, OZ, pdaXrom. The problem for the C3000 is that none of the distros really support it. Neither Cacko nor pdaXrom were build for the C3000, and OZ, although it officially supports the C3000, it does not "feel" like it. When I use OZ, I get the feeling that it was written for the ipaq and just whacked onto the C3000.

Interesting that pdaxrom is not so popular so far - from what I have discovered, graphical apps such as emulators and games run better on it than they do in other distros and I kinda thought this would be the one for me.

Curious how much trouble dual booting would be to setup, I will look into it as I usually like to have plenty of freedom over these things - unless I find myself content with just one of course

At various times I've used pdaXrom, oz/opie, oz/gpe, and cacko on my 3100. And somewhat embarrassingly I find myself using cacko on the 3100 right now. While all the roms have their merits, cacko seems to just work. And since I need to be productive, cacko seems to work best -- although I sometimes give up a bit in choice of apps and gui toolkits.

As an aside, one of the great things about the Nokia 770 is that a number of apps are and have been ported or written for the Hilden App Framework. Since Nokia is actively supporting the OS, a number of developers are porting their favorite apps. It is more than just compiling because often the user interface must be tweaked to match the Nokia environment. But the results can be amazing. Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if Sharp had continued to actively support the community.

Maybe I just don't remember all that well, but I've had some sort of Zaurus since the 5500, and I don't remember Sharp ever really "supporting" the community, much less actively.

But again, maybe I just don't have a great memory.

I use the original Sharp rom because everything just works, and I need my PIM apps.  I tried Cacko for a little while but it has too many problems and doesn't support my wireless card.  I also have pdaxqtrom installed which has some very usefull apps, thanks to meanie.

I use the sharprom just because "everything works".  and meanie did a good job with the pdaxqtrom.  I'm telling you-try out the stock one and see if it fits your needs.  Jump onto the other bandwagons as well and see if they fit your needs.

make sure before you do so, you know exactly what your doing.  and if you brick your zaurus, do not worry, someone here will help.  The zaurus is pretty punishable and can recover.

Your memory is just fine....I was there pretty close to the beginning.

I use cacko as my primary ROM for the 3100 as it needs to just work with as little commandline intervention.

I use tKc on my two 5500s. It's has the best package manager I have tried (I don't connect to the internet, so I can't compare using feeds directly). The downside is that developement seems to have been abandoned.

I try OZ (both OPIE and GPE) from time to time when a new release comes out, but can't ever seem to get everything working right. I'm looking forward to the next release (although, I'll have to try and get another sd card as it sounds essential and I have worn one out and got a bad one on my last purchase). From the buzz around here, it seems like there's going to be bigger and better changes.

I prety new in the zaurus world but I jumped around from Sharp and OZ (GPE and OPIE). I realy liked GPE but I felt some stuff needed to be a bit mor polished and I had the impresion that some apps where missing. Finaly I move to OZ/OPIE.

Re InSearchoF's post:

There certainly are more than 7 pdaXrom users.  I think though that  the breakdown/slowdown in pdax development--beta4 arriving with no "stable" kernel 2.4 version set, and sashz going to work in brazil, sent a lot of people scampering off to check out OZ, or feeling that "stable" pdaX wasn't really in the works after all, back to cacko.  The ratios seem to suggest this, and it is pretty much what I've done personally.
