Application Installation
« on: August 25, 2006, 09:22:55 pm »
I just installed Cacko on my new C3200 and it looks great.  I'd like to install some applications, and it looks like it installs them, I just don't know how to run them once I've installed it.  I don't see any new icons, and don't know how to find the executable file.  Any help would be greately appriciated.

well, its a start.  Cacko is buggy on a 3200.  Do not overclock the cpu because it is not supported and may cause some major lockup problems.

here is the cacko link which you can use.
http://web.mol.ru/~zaurus/feed/

here is another link with software which you can install into the zaurus.
http://www.handheld-linux.com/swi/index.php

this packages are installers known as IPK's.

installing stuff is as easy as installing windows software.  but the only difference is you need to install extra stuff.  Like if you want to play Lgames, you will need to install SDL libraries.  If you want to run the zip game emulators, you need to install 10 different ipk.

If you run into a software which will not launch, use the terminal and type the command that is used to launch the application.  that command can be found by the tab settings, highlight the particular button, edit, and it will reveal the run command for that particular.  The terminal will reveal additional libs needed to install just to make that particular software to run.

anyway, good luck.

In console I often type:
Code: [Select]
ipkg files to see what files were installed, and grab one from .../bin directory, now I can run it in console

You won't find more bugs in the Cacko of a SL-C3200 than in the one of a SL-C3100.

If you want/need to overclock, the best thing to do is to stay away of frequencies other than XXX/208/104, so your options are:
624/208/104
520/208/104
412/208/104 (Regular)
208/208/104 (Power Saving)

All those work pretty well here.

Another thing is your Opera browser. I use it everyday for two months and never found a problem with 7.55 (which others say is buggy).

About install... you could run the apps with the console, but if they don't install correctly and create an icon in the "apps" tab (or whatever other), maybe you're installing something not for your zaurus model/distro. Check it to be sure. Uninstall and reinstall the app also works sometimes. Also, read the description on the package you're installing, just in case it  needs additional ipks (dependencies) in order to work.

Good luck

I've got Cacko on my SL-C1000 and I tried using Package Manager to install packages from the feed.  It retreived the list of available packages from the feed however when I try to install to my SD card it provides two messages :

1) Some apps may only run only on Internal Flash, are you sure you want to Install?

This seems reasonable, so I hit YES

2) Error:  Not enough storage memory.

This one is not correct since its a brand new 4GB SD card and I can add/remove files to it in the Files tab and/or via usb card reader on my windows box.

Any suggestions?

The Cacko feed is a great place to get known working IPKs for Cacko but, in another thread you mentioned that you wanted to run ScummVM.  That feed only has 0.7.0 and not 0.8.2.  0.8.2 is located on this forum and here is the link to [a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=17922]it.[/url]  Make sure you read the whole thread (both pages) to get all the install tips.  I have tested all the LucasArts games with it and aside from a (minor) sound issue the original Maniac Mansion, and Zak McKracken games and a Voice synch problem with The Curse of Monkey Island, all the games are playable (some with a bit of tweeking like The Dig).   Have fun.
I think I'm coming down with what kahm's got!  I now have 3 Zaurii in house!  ;)

A couple of possible issues are:-

Installation process requires internal storage space to unpack IPK file prior to copying to the SD card, so relaese as much internal space as you can.

Install program may get confused with storage cards over 2GB as do some other programs, make sure you have less than 2 GB free before install, by duplication some files or directories.

Hope above helps.

So i have been using a combo of the package manager / flash card install for a couple weeks now with some success.  I got scummvm working along with my planex network card as well as opera.  I'd love to have an email program sync to hotmail or my schools email but i have tried to set up the email program that came with the Cacko rom package to no avail.

I saw that there is another email program "sylpheed" on the package manager.  It is Xqt - and i'm not sure what that means. Is that a different rom? and if so, what is it doing on the cacko feed?

All the Xqt packages require the XQT Xserver to run.  So, they are for the Cacko ROM, but you have to run X windows to get the app to work.  If you aren't keen to run X windows you probably don't to bother with the xqt-* packages.
