Playing .wmv With Mplayer
« on: September 20, 2006, 03:55:33 am »
Quick question, just wondering if it is possible to play .wmv videos with the pdaXrom version of mplayer, and if so, how.

I seem to get audio playback but not video so I am assuming that I am missing the specific codec.
My new toy: C1000/pdaXrom/xfce4 and Rox - now I just have to get it all working!.

Other stuff: Axim x50v and a brace of Newtons....!

With 1.1pre8 (meanie version) it's possible, and it has also gui, but don't use bvdd driver, so it's painfully slow...

You cant use win32 codecs on ARM, but many .WMV not use win32 codecs....

Just installed the Meanie version of Mpayer and have to say that it is great to have a proper gui at last.  It seems to load pretty fast from the console (any body know if it is possible to run it not from the console?) but so far I have not had much luck playing .wmv.

Admittedly I have only tried one file (about 11meg) but the audio sync was way out.  Will have to try some more when I get home.  I really want to avoid having to re-encode all of my .wmv files (ranging from music video clips to full movies) just to run on the Z.  They all run fine on my Pocket PC and I should have thought that the Z would have enough grunt to do the job as well.

Still having mplayer with a proper gui is at least a start!

I repeat:
with 1.0pre8 you can play many wmv, and can see subtitles, but it's very slow without bvdd.
With precedent version you can't play wmv (you can hear only audio), but with bvdd it's more fast, and at 624mhz you can play also huge file (640x480 and more).

If you use scaling option the play become slow...

Yes, I get what you are saying.

I was just saying that it is a pity that we seem to have a choice between a version of mplayer with a great gui and supporting more file types, but which is slow and another version/ which is faster, but no gui and less file support.

I've installed pdaXii13v2 and there are 3 different mplayer binaries available. For me this works very well but playing wmv file that's
bad. So I want to use both the 3 mplayer version of Meanie and the 1.0pre8 version. But I guess if I install the new one the versions of Meanie will get lost!

How can I do this to get all work together?

Thanks

When Meanie modified mplayer, he just renamed the mplayer binary to "mplayer2"
This way, you could have "both" versions of mplayer available, and when you wanted to use Meanie's version, you just started it with typing "mplayer2" (without the quotes).
I'm assuming if you want to use three different versions, you could name the third one as "mplayer3"
The package "mplayer-bvdd-iwmmxt_1.2.0_1_armv5tel.ipk" contains "mplayer2"
So you should be able to install this one with an already existing one.
