Smallest Sharp Rom
« on: September 25, 2006, 05:50:08 am »
Is there a way to build a minimal sharp ROM?
Or can I get one prebuilt?
Or can I just install/uninstall software then just do a backup? Will there be settings/shared files left over?

After playing with all the ROM's I've finally settled on Sharp ROM cause it just works! I'm currently using TRIsoft English Sharp ROM which has a few extras and I've finally decided that Kopi is actually quite good. Movies and music is the only other thing I use. I'd be interested in the tetsu kernal but can't find english info/download. Movies seem a bit slow in the standard ROM.

What I want to do though is get the right software for my needs and nothing more, then do a backup so it's easy to get it back the way I want it.

So what's the easiest way to acheive this?

Cheers,
Dob

Even though it is not quite SharpROM; it sounds like you are looking for Cacko Lite.  That is the most minimal SharpROM like ROM out there.  You get Tetsu's kernel, the minimal amount of stuff installed, KOPI and Kino2 front end for mplayer available for it.

overclocking is impossible as well.  just one notch above the stock is okay but if you go further, it will crash hardcore.

I had tried Cacko but it was such a long time ago now that I can't remember if it did the job I needed. Thanks guys I'll take a look.

Is it as stable as the Sharp ROM?

I'm not bothered about overclocking as long as I can play movies full screen (unless it helps achieve this of course).

For my personal experience, cacko rom seems very stable.
I use the full rom onto an sl-c1000 and I 've never had any problems

Actually I don't think I saw the lite one before but my requirements have changed a bit since playing with the Z. Well I've got Cacko Lite installed now and it seems nice. The icons are much better and no pesky apps. Great start.

I'm really struggling to get kino/mplayer or even just mplayer to work. All the info on kino and mplayer I can find seems to be for old versions so not sure which options to use. I got it to play once but it's not working again. Anyway I'll create another post regarding this.

-vm and -fs is what I have. works fine when the overclocking is on maximum, otherwise some movies play less than smooth.

Do you use kino2 to do the overclocking or something else?

If you installed the lite version make sure to use the right package feed.  This is the one that's on the Cacko website.

http://web.mol.ru/~zaurus/feed/

When I installed mplayer and kino from there it worked great.

If I may just add, All of the packages that were removed from Cacko, to create the "Cacko Lite" version, are named like this:
(Example) recievedata_1.23-lite-1_arm.ipk
They will have "lite" in the filename.

Which version of kino did you use?
Could you also tell me what settings you used.

Thanks.

Maybe I not encoding the movies correctly. I used Cresho's guide at http://home.earthlink.net/~cresho/start.htm

I use cacko heavy, the overclocking is carried out via a standard applet within that distro........just select the fastest option.

Ok if I use VirtualDub I get a playable movie but the quality isn't great and that's three rather long steps to encoding. DVD Decryptor, Vidomi, then Virtual Dub.

Anyone know of a quicker way and preferably better quality (but still playable) if possible.
