it's probably the IDE mode thing that the other posters were talkingt about.
Several manufacturers disabled these microdrives and made them IDE mode only to prevent people from buying mp3 players, just to rip the microdrive out. sorry, I tried...

This thread discusses what I mentioned avove

But it works with my PC

This sucks.  I paid $10 for it.  Lol.  Anyone know a way to get around that?  Someone mentioned modding on an old thread[how?].

And it doesn't look like there is any news on modding a MicroDrive to fit intenally.  I opened the Zaurus before and looked.

I would have to buy a cheap CF card reader that I'm willing to pull a pin back.  I broke my last spare on a 20gb iPod HDD

Here's a thread that lists compatable/noncompatable Hitachi drives. (Aug 2004)
https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...indpost&p=37783
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you're using a Hitachi white label OEM 4Gb microdrive, the key point is to check the barcode on the microdrive.
To date, I've collected the following info:

Last digits of barcode / CF compatable
3BA Yes
41C Yes
42B Yes
43B Yes
44C No
45C No
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

do a search for "muvo" in all forums. (Muvo is where all the discussions of Hitachi 4GB drives are)
I know yours is an Apple, and is probably newer than the ones mentioned in the thread I posted.
There's a thread that suggests that card readers have IDE/CF interface, and that's why the drive works in a card reader connected to a PC

I honestly would not recommend an external microdrive because popping it in and out of the zaurus causes compression on the drive and can burn out the motor just like i did with a 320 dollar microdrive from ibm when i had the sl 5500.  it is best used internally.
Zaurus C-3200 (internal 8gb seagate drive) with buuf icon theme, cacko 1.23 full,  and also Meanie's pdaxqtrom-Debian/Open Office
Zaurus SL-5500 Sharp Rom 3.13 with steel theme
pretec pocket pc wi fi
ambicom bt2000-cf bluetooth-made in taiwan
simpletech 1gb cf
pny 1gb sd
patriot 2gb
ocz or patriot 4gb sd(failed after 2 weeks)only on z
creative csw-5300 speakers in stereo
DigiLife DDV-1000 for video, Audio, Picture recording playable on the zaurus
Mustek DV4500-video recorder, pictures, voice record on sd for z
