I Think I've Messed Up My C3100

I decided to install Meanie's updated battery applet (combbatteryapplet.ipk) and just as the installation completed the screen display suddenly showed the Silicon Zaurus screen which comes after the initial Sharp screen in the boot sequence.

The Silicon Zaurus screen showed for 15 seconds then the screen goes black with some very tiny print in the bottom left corner which shows for less than a half second and the Silicon Zaurus screen displays again. The C3100 just keeps cycling through this sequence.

I tried rebooting with same result.

Is there anything that I can do to resolve this?

Depends.

you can do 2 things.

1. you can go into the boot menu and restore your pda but it will also delete all hardisk files.

or

2.  you can go into your service menu and do a nand restore which will preserve your internal drive without deleting anything.

be warned since you may be new at this, not following directions correctly can lead you into more problems.

NOt only that, Im not even sure if you are using sharprom or the cacko.

I should have said that I'm using the standard Sharp ROM.

1. Losing what is on the hard drive wouldn't be a problem. Would I also lose whatever new packages I've installed to what is, I believe, know as the 'Program Area'?

Would I also then need to do the English translation bit? I forget now how I did that.  

Do you have any idea what might have caused this problem?

I've now tried the reset procedure:

Turn off the Zaurus and disconnect power suppy cable.
Unlock the battery compartment and take out the battery.
Wait for approx. 5 seconds.
Press the reset button
Reinsert the battery, close the cover and lock.
Connect the power supply and wait until the yellow charging LED lights up.

Then I go through the reset procedure and finally 'Sharp', in red letters, appears on a white ground with a flashing cursor bottom right.

I don't know who dreamed up the routine for getting into single user mode but I assume he must have been from another planet as it appears to require 3 arms!

I managed eventually, with help in holding down keys, to get a linux prompt and ran fdisk. The three partitions were there but it reminded me that I had changed the third partition from VFAT to Ext3 and I assumed that would be the problem causing the 'hdd3 error'. I deleted and re-created the partion as VFAT(LBA) and formated it with 'mkfs.vfat -F 32 /dev/hda3' which I hoped would put things right. Wrong!

I still get the 'hdd3 error'. Any more advice anyone? Please!

It's probably too late but the easiest way to fix the zaurus after installing that package was to just boot into the console (there is a way with the 3100 I forget, probably a combination of buttons) and remove that applet file.  I had this happen once with a tray applet I installed that wasn't meant for the 3100.  I just booted to a console and deleted it then my Z was back to normal and qtopia didn't continually crash anymore.

What happens when you hit ctrl-C after seeing the hdd3 error?  I got this error when I changed hdd3 from FAT to ext3 without changing the mount program.  But I was able to hit ctrl-c to move past this so I could at least boot up the Zaurus.  It wasn't a perfect boot because a bunch of stuff didn't work but at least I could get to the console.

did you create the .sys dir and restored the files from trisoft?

Fooman you're a genius.     I didn't think of trying Ctrl-C but doing that does indeed get past the error and it now boots into a Japanese Qtopia.

Before that I had gone back to the console and tried a few things. I did fsck.vfat on hda3 and there were no errors. I mounted hda3 and created  lost+found and Documents empty directories with no problems. I don't know what this HDD3 error could be.

moi - I didn't need to because the error is only on hdd3 not hdd1 and/or hdd2.

Incidentally the instructions from Trisoft on how to get into the console are overly complicated - no wonder I though it would need a Martian with 3 arms to do it.

All that's needed is:

1. Remove power and battery from the SL-C3000.

2. Replace battery and with the Battery Cover OFF, return the battery cover lock to the LOCKED position.

3. Hold down D+B on the keyboard and whilst these keys are held press the reset button using the stylus.

4. Release the D+B keys and within a few seconds the unit should start to boot into Emergency Linux.

Even I can manage that on my own - and it works!

I'll try some more investigating tomorrow.

I have now restored HDD3 to what I believe was it's original state.

'dict1' and 'dict2' directories copied from CD
'Documents' directory with original sub-directories
lost+found

Booting with that still gives HDD3 error. Ctrl-C gets me past that and into the Japanese version of Qtopia. The green hdd light is now flashing slowly regularly all the time - looking for something?

I tried the English conversion from Trisoft but when I get to selecting 'Restore' then selecting 'cf' I get a window with three paragraphs of Japanese and an OK button and the 'Harddrive, sd,cf' dropdown goes blank again. No opportunity to choose the backup file.

The CF card I'm using has a directory called 'Backup_Files' with the unzipped backup in it.

I'm baffled! Any more suggestions will be very welcome.

I've just seen this on Meanies site:

"The C3100 has a third CD-ROM which contains the files for the Contents_Files directory. However, the sd_map directory (C3100 only) does not apppear to be anywhere on the CDs so make sure you make a backup of it."

Where does the Contents_Files directory go? I don't have a copy of the sd_map directory. Where does that go?

don't need to turn to the Cresho's approaches if your Z has network(wifi/ethernet/usb) and sshd service enabled. I have always keep them on by default thus let me do quite simple recovery. Using another machine and ssh to Z, remove the package that you have installed or just remove the problematic binary at first. Then you will be able to clean on a working Z. I have met the same problem as you before, and I solved the problem quite quickly.

An update.

I still have the same problem above but the message has changed (Don't know why) from three paragraphs to a single line message with one OK button and the backup source dropdown goes blank again after the button is clicked. The message window has a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in it.

I've tried a different CF card with the same result.
