samba process nmbd dies
« on: March 05, 2004, 01:28:21 pm »
Hello,

I am running samba on my Z (SL5500, OZ3.3.1, Opie1.0) to access its directorystructure from a windows box.
This works well as long as I start samba manually, or after a reboot through a script in rc2.d
But if I remove the Z from the cradle, and plug it in later again, the nmbd process is gone. Smbd is still running.
And because of that missing nmdb process, the zaurus is not visible on my windows neighborhood.

Has anybody an idea about how to fix this, or has anybody had the same experience? Would it help to start samba through inetd.conf ?

thanks,
Ulf

Ulf,

I\'ve run into a similar problem using OZ 3.2, although I don\'t think it has anything to do with the rom.  I turned on error logging for samba (change \"/dev/null\" in /etc/samba.conf to \"/var/log/samba.log\") and the error was that no network device was present.  Try checking your network devices and see if any of them are active, perhaps?  I checked mine and usbd0 was inactive.  As soon as I started that, and restarted samba, both processes showed up properly.

Good luck!

Shane

btw - I\'ve been cautioned elsewhere to remember that logging is turned on - and to turn it off when no longer needed (files can get quite large).   It\'s just the kind of thing I\'d forget...

Connecting to my C860 with samba works for me, using inetd. Try it out.
