Does The 3200 Sd Driver Support Sdhc?
« on: January 01, 2007, 11:46:47 pm »
Okay, I'm a bit confused thanks to that SDHC specification.  There are some 4GB SD cards out there that are based on the old SD specs (I'll call them SD enhanced for simplicity sake) and some that are based on the SDHC specs.  Which type of 4GB card will work with the SD driver that came bundled on the 3200.  SD enhanced or SDHC or both?  Thanks for your help.
I think I'm coming down with what kahm's got!  I now have 3 Zaurii in house!  ;)

Hi,
I`am using a 4GB Platinum Card (I think its the "old" SD specs)

By using the original sharp rom, there was no problem to mount.

So if I "upgrade" to cacko 1.23 I have to install the sd-driver (sdmmc-module_2.4.20_arm.ipk) from http://zaurus.daemons.gr/menaie/mirror/ and it works too.

The SDHC is FAT32 format, I think. If I know right, the zaurus have a problem by reading fat32.

best regards

Thorsten

By Platinum you mean Lexar Platinum right?  I'm using the Tetsu one (that Cresho used to link to in this forum) on my 3200 and 1000 running Cacko 1.23.  I think the driver you mentioned should work under Cacko as well.  Most cards over 2GB should come from the factory with FAT32 formats.

I'm using a transcend 4gb on cacko 1.23 in a C1000. Works fine.

Newer SDHC cards *must* have the SDHC label on the card and have a speed rating as well.

The diff between normal SD and SDHC is not just the filesystem as a SD host device will not read a SDHC card or so the site below says. And SD itself has three revisions so far. I had a newer SDcard that fails in some older readers.

That doesn't look too promising for us then, since it is  looking like a hardware issue.  Since the 3200 driver is backward compatible on all 1/3x00 models that means the SD hardware slot has not shanged in the 3200.  Therefore the Z will get stuck at 2GB once the vendors stop making non-SDHC 4GB cards.

Forgive me for asking the obvious.... but couldn't a SDHC card just be reformatted FAT16, or EXT2/3 and thus become usable on a Zaurus?

SDHC cards are Not Backward Compatible with older devices, and most current devices.
That's why Sandisk includes a SDHC capable minature USB 2.0 card reader with it's new 4GB SDHC SD card.
Also you'll need a newer SDHC Compatible Card reader if you are going to use SDHC cards in Windows.
Some newer cameras are SDHC. You'll have to look for the 'SDHC' logo.

EDIT:
Also, there is some hacking going on with the driver for the Treo 650 and it's "so-called" SDHC drivers. Someone is trying to get this driver to work on other Palm devices.

It seems that the changes to support sdhc were not too important :-)

But now for 2.4 support... who wants to patch the sharp binary driver ?

I don't know if SDHC will make all the current 4GB SD cards obsolete, but in the future, it may be difficult to purchase a new "Standard" 4GB SD card.
Don't take that last comment seriously, it's just a guesstimate.

Okay, this happening faster than I thought it would.  Lexar, SanDisk and Transcend are no longer listing non-SDHC 4GB cards in their product guides.  All of them say that if you want more than 2GB in SD format you need an SDHC spec card.  So that tells me that whatever is in channel for non-SDHC 4GB SD cards is it.

Also, an SDHC linux driver won't be much use to us if the SD slots in our Zaurii aren't SD 2.0 compatible so, please keep that in mind.  The spec sheet from Sharp for the 3200 only says it is an SD slot so, we can't assume that it is SD 2.0 compliant and I highly doubt it is.

The SD 2.0 specifications were announced in January of last year.  The 3200 would have been in the final manufacturing stages so, that it would be ready for March.  That means there was no way that Sharp could have changed the 3200's design to incorporate the SD 2.0 spec.

SDHC cards are reported to work on Ångström and with new kernels,
so there is no problem with the hardware whatsoever.
