I installed latest version on my 3100 using instructions from 1st post. It works, but I find that it hangs on that messg: EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode for at least 10 minutes on each reboot, very annoying.

Also, there don't seem to be any hostap drivers so my Ambicom 1100 card doesn't work (won't work with orinoco drivers either)

I guess it's back to to the latest version of pdaXrom & GPE for me. I like the tweaks Meanie has done, but I gotta have wireless.

Cheers,

Jerry

hi there ...

What are the symptoms when you plug in the card? Any led lights?
Try giving us the output of "cardctl ident" and "cardctl status", maybe we can help fix the wifi.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=152689\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Thanks, cardctl ident outputs the correct card info. However, after careful review, I realized I installed the 5.3 version and am now reflashing using the 5.3 updater & tools.bin, but using the 5.2 kernel and boot loader and HD image. So, I can't tell what the card status output was, but there were no lights on the card and dmesg showed no errors.

Update- Doh! the HDimage from the Alpha page is not 5.3 as I thought. So I'm back to square one. cardctl status show "ready" but lsmod shows no drivers loaded. And it still takes forever to reboot

Update # 2: My Avatar says it all!
I had a custom disk partition scheme and there wasn't enough space on hdc1, I didn't notice the errors until my last reflash, doh! Amazingly enough, Wifi works now that all of the files have been extracted to the hard drive.

Cheers

I've just updated the 1st post, very likely for the last time until 5.3 or an updated pdaXii13 Akita gets released.

I added:

The USB openbox keybindings bug(s)

An ESSENTIAL TIPS section which tells you how to change the default font size and to remove scim packages if you don't need Chinese input support for greatly improved speed loading most X apps.

Added more info to the USB settings section and made a couple of minor edits.

Glad to hear you got your USB prob sorted Jon_J!

I decided to try pdaxii13-akita. It's a whole lot faster and runs entirely from flash!
The downfall is, the upgrade path isn't working at the moment, so you're stuck with just the base install.
Upgrade path - is installing pdaxii13 full image to hard drive, and having the entire system use both NAND and the HDD.
There are 2 other main issues with pdaxii13-akita

1. microdrive doesn't automount upon boot
2. Module Dependencies FAILED error during boot

I'll stop ranting about the akita version, if interested go read about it here.

I made a new initrd.bin but have not uploaded it yet. this new initrd.bin contains fixes that will hopefully automount the partitions on the microdrive and also allow you to upgrade to pdaXii13 full.

That will be really nice!
Since the akita NAND version runs so much faster, I'll keep and/or install all my small apps onto the NAND.
Then I'll install large applications, such as Abiword onto the hard drive partition.

This way, my smaller apps will have an "instant on" PDA-like feel, and when I want to use my Zaurus as a laptop replacement, I can use my larger applications which will reside on the HDD.
Best of both worlds!

Now if I can only squeeze Cacko in there, somewhere... (just kidding)

That would be great!
I hope that it would workand there will be no more unresolved  module dependencies.

Thanks  Meanie!

When Meanie upgrades the fixed pdaXii13 Akita I will give it another go, but is what you propose possible Jon_J? I know under Cacko it asks you where you'd like to install an app but afaik the pdaXrom package manager doesn't give you the option of instaling to NAND or MD but I'm sure you could probably manually move and link the files after installation although that could be quite tedious.

Meanie:

What concerns me about the pdaXii13 Akita full install method is that only /usr is stored on the MD- what about /home? Obviously /home/root is the default path for installing zgcc and I often store all my source code and compiles etc. under my home dir. What do you think of adding support for other partitions to pdaXii13 Akita? Would anybody else be interested in such a setup?

You can configure the install targets in the file /etc/ipkg.conf
You can give any directory (or at least every mount point) as a target.
Choosable on the command line ipk with the -d option, on the qpkg GUI-based package manager in the upper right corner in the dropdown.

You can always link the directories anywhere you want them to be.
For example (not being Meanie, nor having installed pdaXii13 yet   ) I have the zgcc image on the hard drive and just linked it into /home/root. This works very well.
Also, I linked the entire /home/root to a directory on the hard drive, in order not to fill up the flash with files applications may throw into the home directory.

But I have learned during my development in the last months, that it is not very useful to pre-link directories to other partitions in a system distribution, because the usage pattern of users varies so much that each user may have different needs where he prefers to have much space and where not.

I'm pretty sure that Meanie wrote about /home on the hdd. /home is on hdd in the pdaxii13 version for SL-C3000. It works there, it should work on the SL-C3100 too.

Hi daniel3000!

Thanks for filling me in on the ipkg install options and yes I think just making /home a link to a dir on the MD would be the way to go. Dunno why I didn't consider that before as it seems painfully obvious now

I partitioned my microdrive to the default setup awhile back when I installed pdaxii13 (5.2) to my hard drive (I installed pdaxrom beta3 first)
I then reformated my hard drive (hdc1) I reinstalled pdaxrom beta 3
Later, I installed pdaxii13-akita, which overwrote pdaxrom beta3
Now I installed pdaxii13 full image to my hard drive hdc1

Here's a screenie of package manager with the available mounts to install software.

EDIT: Yes you can see in the screenie that there are things installed twice. (double vision)
Those double entries are showing pdaxii13 full image on the hard drive (these don't actually have desktop counterparts)
The double entries don't actually effect anything, since my hdc1 partition is manually mounted and isn't linked anywhere.
The other half of the double entries are the programs/libs, etc that are on flash. These are the actual working ones.
I'm just waiting for meanie to update the full upgrade, then I'll either uninstall the duplicates, or wipe everything, and start fresh again.
The duplicate install does come in handy for copying .desktop files for when I install something new to Flash and it doesn't "register", and if it does have a .desktop file in the duplicates.

Just updated the install guide yet again

--------------------------

ADDITIONS

(this bug applies to both the c3000 and c3100 and I'm sure I mentioned it elsewhere on the forum but an aim of this doc is to collect all the current bugs in one place)

3. CAPS LOCK doesn't work in a default install and if you uncomment it in /etc/X11/kb/spitz.xmodmap then pushing the TAB key has the effect of both TAB and switching CAPS LOCK at the same time.

I also added a section on setting up a dial-up internet connection as this seems to be missing from the current zbook

CHANGES

I changed the tip on altering the default font to refer to the GTK theme selector instead of editing gtkrc

--------------------------

However, I think it was Jon_J who said that pdaXii13 is now at version 5.2.4 and is now codenamed 'Sally'. If this is the case and 5.2.4 is what is now available publicly from tyrannozaurus then it would be good if someone running a fresh install of 5.2.4 could check to see if all these bugs are still present. Thanks!

I've been testing the latest akita version "Sally"
I've used the latest akita-fix, dated Feb 06 - 2007
It still has a bug. I installed "Sally", then copied the files in the akita-fix to recommended directories.
The files inside akita-fix.tgz are mkfs.init and rc.rofilesys
Then I rebooted. pdaxii13-akita got to the welcome screen, then it says:

running rc.rofilesys
model is SL-C3200

Then it hangs up permanently.

I also posted this at tyrannozaurus in the pdaxii13 for C1000 thread.

EDIT: the first version of pdaxii13-akita "Alice" runs fine on my C3200, it does need a tweak to usbfunction.py to get the selection of CF cards in the USB settings app.

there is an updated fix/patch for akita upgrade....

anyway, here is a list of known problems and resolutions plus enhancements:
http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/?q=node/210

as for the caps lock thing, this is not a bug since caps lock is not needed with sticky keys enabled and thus been purposely deactivated. if you don't like it, change it yourself and make your own custom config...

CAPS LOCK serves a different purpose to sticky keys doesn't it? As I far as I can tell, when sticky keys is turned on and you push the shift key then the next letter and only the next letter is printed in capitals. With caps lock, of course, when it is enabled then EVERY key pushed afterwards becomes capitalised so I fail to see how sticky keys is a substitute for caps lock as they function differently. If somebody really wants caps lock to work then how would they go about it?

The official list of known problems you linked to excludes all the problems (unwanted key bindings) I've listed that 5.2 has with USB keyboards i.e Alt_Gr loading Stardict etc. This problem is present on the c3000 and I would imagine affects US and other USB keyboards than just UK. Of course, that lists also makes no mention of the c3100/3200 specific bugs either but then thats what pdaXii13A is for. When somebody successfully upgrades pdaXii13A to the full version I will update this guide as needed - it will likely become unnecessary then.
