What is the BEST linux to run with an SL-5600

What is the best linux to use with an sl-5600.

It is not going to matter from a Zaurus linux <=> desktop linux standpoint.  It is what you are comfortable using..  Start with a good beginner distro like Mandrake, Suse, or RedHat (I think, have not used it since the Fedora spin-off.)  

Learn what you need to know, then start playing with some other distros to see what you like.  Thanks to all the LiveCD distros, you can play with a bunch of different ones without major installs, etc.

I\'ll bet there is no one here that has used only one or two distros.  You run linux, you start to tinker sooner or later.

It\'s not so much of a case of which distro, but which version of your favourite distro. Any distro that comes with kernel 2.4.21 or later should be fine as that is where the kernel module needed for the 5600 was introduced.

Sure you can always build your own kernel, but its always nice when something works out of the box (Or at least only requires a text config file to be tweaked/written).

My current unhappy experience with Redhat 9 leads me to disagree:  its seriously-lame RPM management tool (which is one of the most important components of any system) rules it out as being acceptable for newbies.

I\'v never used Suse,  so I don\'t know about it.  Mandrake is definitely newbie-friendly,  though.  Perhaps the best among the widely-used ones,  unless you\'re using an older machine that might be short on RAM or CPU.

I\'ve heard some favorable comments about Lycoris being a good \"starter\" distro:  they picked a set of apps that they think are good,  and eliminated a lot of the choices that can be daunting when you\'re not yet familiar with what\'s available in the way of newsreaders,  media players, etc.  Some folks dislike that on \"ideological\" grounds,  but I think there\'s a good case to be made for letting users \"ease into\" the transition,  and defer those choices until they\'ve had a chance to get up to speed.

I actually come pretty close,  as far as my \"main\" system goes:  I try to keep it as stable as practical,  and ran Mandrake 8.0 on my old one for about 2 years.  It was the first distro I installed when I decided to migrate from OS/2,  and I stuck with it until the box was retired.  So Mandrake and Redhat are the only two I\'ve got a lot of \"day-to-day\" experience with.  I\'ve done a fair amount of tinkering using other PCs,  though.

hahah i agree with padishah_emperor on both points  yast makes linux positively noob friendly, I still remember trying to use rh4.1
But I would stay away from the more windows like distros (err lindows and xandros i think) at the start, as from what i gather they do not discourage the usage of root for day to day tasks.

Thank you all for answering my question.

  I have run redhat 9 for a while now and it seems to work very good.

  Two days ago I tryed to run Debian but could not even get it loaded,
I think I might have a bad file on one for the cd\'s BUT I got redhat back up and running in about an hour so I was very impressed by that.

  Now tonight I found a Gentoo site that was in english, so I\'ll try to download a copy and install it, i\'ll let you know what happens,

  well the idea is to run my desktop with something that works well with an sl-5600 so if you have any idea\'s please type a message and I will give it a try.
