State Of C3x00 Calendar Apps
« on: July 05, 2007, 08:17:08 am »
I'm wondering what most c3x00 owners out there are doing for calender programs either under pdaXii13 or cacko? Does anyone here use gpe-calendar under pdaXii13 on c3000 and have used it reliably for any considerable length of time? I've not tried the last few releases of pdaXii13 so maybe it works now?

Maybe its a problem just with pdaXii13? Does gpe-calendaer work properly under Angstrom or the latest pdaXrom version?

Are all Cacko users just using the Sharp default calendar app? Are there any other good calendar apps for cacko, pdaXii13 or Angstrom?

I'm presuming from the lack of responses that nobody is using gpe-calendar then so I'm presuming it is still broke.

I don't need anything amazingly powerful and it doesn't need to sync with anything either but

a) It must work reliably
b ) It must support alarms and waking the Z up from suspend if necessary
c) Must be able to backup and restore the calendar

I originally asked for possible solutions running under Angstrom, pdaXii13 or cacko but it sounds like Angstrom isn't quite ready to replace pdaXii13 for me yet so I'm just looking for a working calendar app for pdaXii13 now.

well, first impressions for gpe-calendar under angstrom :
-it is working (!)
-it does not resume from suspend for alarms
-i had no alarm sound at all...

but perhaps it needs some tweakings to work efficiently

I tried to use GPE Calendar under pdaXii13 5.3.4 a few months back. It failed on all three.  Shortly after that the company I work for gave my BlackBerry so I transferred all the Calendar and AddressBook functions to it.  Your best bet is to use KAPI and KOPI since with a little work those features will work the way they are supposed to.
I think I'm coming down with what kahm's got!  I now have 3 Zaurii in house!  ;)

I tried gpe-calendar.  But the version available for Angstrom (which I was using at the time) was not the same as that on my desktop (debian), and the file formats were incompatible.  So, I could not propagate calendar entries from one machine to another.  Then, with the next update of Angsstrom, the new version of gpe-calendar would not read the calendar files from the previous version.  That ended my experiment with gpe-calendar.  Changing formats -- and not even providing upward compatibility, makes the damn thing unusable.

If you switch to xfce4 for your window-manager, you can use orage, which is what I am now doing (using titchy/debian on the Z).

In angstrom (actually, in openembedded, I don't think it has been included in angstrom feeds yet), I've started using "dates" (and others PIM apps) from pimlico project : [a href=\"http://www.pimlico-project.org]http://www.pimlico-project.org[/url]

It looks great and is pretty usable. I didn't test alarms and so on yet as I first need to make sure the speaker / headphone issues are resolved. I hope they works, and let you know when I find out, even though I'm not sure if it would be possible to recover from suspend for an alarm in angstrom currently.

I just bought a 3200 so I'm currently on Sharp ROM but I want to go to some variant of pdaX*.

Just a thought: How hard would it be to port Qtopia/OPIE PIM apps to pdaX ?
Wouldn't solve the problem of wake up from suspend etc but they are quite decent apps.

I think it would be an issue-- pdaX uses standard QT libs, the shapropm stuff is build on qte (embedded) libs. imho they aren't the same- hence the absence of qte based software on pdax.

But something small and simple, that handled alarms and wakeups would be nice

Hence I said "port".

It seems to me that if someone put together a Qtopia support library for pdaX then many apps could be more easily converted. The differences between QT/e and QT aren't so great.  I've written apps for the Sharp ROM and QT full edition and if I try pdaX and like it then I intend to write more apps, but I am concerned that I'm not enough of a Linux wizard to do things like get the Z to wake up for an alarm or detect a screen rotation.

I agree it'd be a good idea, I simply seem to remember hearing a lot of "can't be done" sort of comments on similar conversations

OTOH  I'd be more than happy if ANY of my available contact/calendar apps would sync with my nokia.

Simply editing the info on the Z and having the phone manage the alarms and quick info retrieval would be perfect.

Porting can be done if you have some programming skills and the source is available. The issue is that you cannot run the Cacko/Sharp ROM apps directly on pdaXrom without recompilation since some of those apps are not opensource and hence cannot be recompiled/ported.

as for waking up for apm, there needs to be a daemon written for it. In pdaXrom Classic (beta1/beta3/pdaXii13) the openbox window manager has some code added by sash to do it, hence wakeup works if you use openbox but not with other window managers unless you added your own wakeup daemon...

I use the button on the Z to suspend, and to wake up.  With debian (titchy), I don't have --- though it may be possible to arrange --- any suspend-after-idle or the like.  But the button works, and it wakes up properly.  I have not had a black screen on wakeup since ---- one of the Angstrom releases I think.

to return somewhat to the OT, certainly this does not wake up from suspend on an alarm.  I don't know of any rom/distro which would do that.
