Icehamster (was: Customising Minimo)
« on: January 29, 2008, 08:05:55 am »
Debian Iceweasel doesn't seem to work under EABI, and it's a bit heavy for a Zaurus anyway.  Minimo (installed from the Angstrom feed) works well for me, but the UI is a bit quirky, and things like URLs on the command line don't work.  I've started work on fixing it:

Icehamster

Maybe this is of use to some of you.  I'll build a proper .deb package as soon as I find the Minimo source...

Hi, I have repacked a minimo deb from Ångström official ipk.
You may download it at this OESF thread.

I also repacked a icehamster deb mixed from Ångström minimo ipk and the icehamster_0.1.deb.
Thus you can install icehamster only and do not have do something dirty like "--force-overwrite".
You may download it here. I will also put it in the thread I mentioned above.
UPDATE: new version of icehamster no longer needs a "remixed" deb.

I am using it now, and like it a lot.  I will try it as my default browser and see how it goes.  It remembers things like my OESF forum password, which helps a bit.  Forward and back buttons work, which is a pleasant change for a browser robust enough for my banking site.

I would prefer a local bookmarks page, and to set the default startup page, but I can hack that with a button pointing icehamster to a page containing the bookmarks I want.

Since this is now my main computer, an improvement in the browser situation is much appreciated.

Icehamster had released version 0.2.

It depends on minimo now, and no longer needs a "remixed" deb.

That's the only change.  I'll probably  -  if I may  -  link to your page for the nicely-packaged Minimo deb.

Minimo has some sort of built-in bookmarks system, but it doesn't work out-of-the-box and I can't find any documentation for it.  If anyone knows XUL and Javascript, patches would be appreciated.

I may try to integrate one of the Firefox extensions for Google Bookmarks or del.icio.us or similar  -  if it's lightweight enough.

I can't download either minimo or the icehamster wraparound from that link.  Both give error messages to the effect tgat some file can't be downloaded since it does not exit.

Downloading seems to be broken in Minimo (and therefore also in Icehamster).  I'll see what I can do.

In the meantime, you'll have to use a different browser...

The minimo deb put in calno.com is hosted by ehostsource.

I can download it without problem. I have no clue if it was down when you try it.

As far as I know, ehostsource's service is quite stable.

Maybe you can put a mirror in some free webspace service?

To clarify:  this is a problem with Minimo itself, not the debs or the hosting.  Using Minimo (or Icehamster) to download anything produces an error message like "/tmp/xzcmnams.deb could not be saved, because the source file could not be read. Try again later, or contact the server administrator."

I'll try to track it down and fix it in the next version.

Well, I tried using another web browser.  Neither dillo nor websurf managed it.  Dillo had trouble with this site, for some reason (the oesf site, which had worked before), and netsurf downloaded the minimo document, but then displayed it as a bunch of garbage in the window, but woult not let me save it.

Fixing the dowload problem in icehamster would be nice for me.  I had to go to a machine in my temporary office to get it, so now I have to go wash my hands.

Wow great work.

This is now my primary browser. For the longest time I've been looking for some way besides wget to download etexts off of gutenberg straight to my zaurus and this works wonderfully. It even deftly handled many of the ad banners (whether thats a good thing or not is yet to be determined).

Thanks a ton
